From the #climatecrisis to #Internationaltrade as Martin Wolf (FT) concludes:

'if the west is to have the influence it hopes for, it must realise that its claims to moral superiority are neither unchallengeable nor unchallenged. Many in our world view the western powers as selfish, self-satisfied & hypocritical. They are not altogether wrong. We must do far better'!

We have forgotten a past that for other countries remains all too alive & this colours their perceptions of our motives!

My latest for @NWBylines looks at Investor State Dispute Settlement (which is part of the Comprehensive & Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership) that the UK has just joined... #ISDS is not an uncommon element of #internationaltrade agreements (despite the EU cooling on them recently).

I conclude that ISDS 'is a window on how states have either facilitated, or been forced to facilitate, an expansion of the rights of #corporations'.

There is often talk about the pivot to the East, both in politics & economics, as a reflection of the global political economic power of #China.

One more bit of (recent) evidence is the doubling of trade financing (loans & facilities used in the #internationaltrade) that now uses the #renminbi;

certainly this remains a small proportion of dollar financing but since the start of the Ukraine war it has gone from 2% to 4% global share (for comparison the Euro is used in around 6% of trading).

Even by the Govt.'s own estimates joining the Comprehensive & Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (the Trans-Pacific free trade agreement) will hardly make any impression on the losses in #internationaltrade from #brexit...

But what it does show though, is #RishiSunak like his #Tory predecessors is much more interested in headlines & announcements than actually material change (or wellbeing).

I've called this 'declaratory politics' before & this is just one more example!

Meanwhile in #shipping:

in the last year 'blank sailings' where #container ships on a regular round route miss out stops as there is insufficient volume for a docking to be economic have increased...

This is partly due to demand issues across the world, partly due to #supplychain disruption in #China due to #covid, and perhaps more clearly is an indicator that currently #internationaltrade remains depressed... itself which may (being optimistic) indicate a shift to 'anchoring' of production

For me, we need to also reserve a place for the (humble?) #container; it revolutionised the possibilities of #internationaltrade, facilitated (for good or ill) global #supplychains and changed the way we understood what was available to buy everyday (not as rare luxuries);

Also of course its supportive #infrastructure!

In 2012, David Cameron (remember him) 'promised' that under the #Tories UK exports would hi £1trillion by 2020... now, despite the help of #inflation (making reaching that nominal figure a little easier, one would think), the Dept. on #InternationalTrade doesn't expect the UK to reach that target until 2035... 15 years late.

Whatever you think about such 'commitments', one thing is clear, even by their own standards, the last decade has been a disaster in #economic terms!

Its now clear that for anyone trading into the #EU, #BrexitReality is a major problem; after decades of friction free #exports the (reimposition of) #NonTariffBarriers has put a brake on exporters trade!.

Ignoring the gravity theory of #internationaltrade #Brexiters told them (& us) enhanced trade with distant trading partners would make up the difference, but of course what reality has demonstrated (as the 'gravity theory' predicts) is its always easier/more efficient to deal with neighbours!

#introduction I live and work in #ottawa (unceded anishinaabe territory), but I grew up on a farm in #Saskatchewan #treaty6 and still have lots of family there.
