and can boost , but hybridization may also cause loss of - how do species avoid this “dark side of introgression”? Discuss with us @m_matschiner in our symposium no.3 at in sunny Italy! smbe2023.org/

A new paper based on Paul Thompson's 1978 dissertation on the Quercus prinoides complex (the chinquapin oaks), describing two hybrids involving Q. prinoides / Q. muehlenbergii. This is a tough group... there is still ample need in North America for taxonomic discovery, documentation of variation within species, and clarification of the effects of hybridization on the species we recognize.

@NaturalSelection

I agree.

The only thing I would have added is a summarising doodle, a cactus metaphor ( by D. Morrison: Tree metaphors and mathematical trees: phylonetworks.blogspot.com/201)

Reds = maternal lineages (plastomes); blue = nucleomes, (speciation history), stippled arrows = "chloroplast captures" in but is in fact hostile takeover via asymmetric or followed by backcrossing with one parent only.

Belatedly, I am a plant systematist at The Morton , with active projects in ( / , , , genetic and functional ), (effects of and functional diversity on outcomes), ( and evolution), and other plant groups. I also tweet on and of the region and other areas. Meet my lab at: systematics.mortonarb.org
