What a strange coincidence: every protest I've ever attended or witnessed that's been led by #Indigenous people, there are always at least three or four times the number of police, with riot squad always visible.
The ones in darker uniforms here without hi-viz vests are riot police. A handful of years ago they launched a sudden, unprovoked, unnecessary and highly dangerous charge into this #InvasionDay march, knocking dozens to the ground, hospitalising three people (one with permanent brain damage), and arresting a handful, who were charged with assaulting police. It was riot police who attacked; the alleged 'assaults' included things like people who had jumped over fellow protesters on the ground in order to help them not get trampled in the melee (and had made no bodily contact with any police).
At one of the subsequent trials (where I was a witness for the defence), the police prosecutor tried to talk to me during a recess in my cross-examination (after *just* being told not to by the magistrate), and in the interchange, threw in some casual racism to boot, saying no doubt we'd all be here again next year after the next rally since [racist opinion of Aboriginal people]. #ACAB
