"Many of the world’s best athletes are women. And many of the world’s sporting records are held by women. But due to human bias, our search engines have learnt to prioritise sportsmen in our search results, even when the facts put sportswomen first."

This is a great project and something I can easily do while sitting and watching TV!

H/T to the excellent newsletter for the pointer

Is anyone making Bookish resolutions for the New Year?

I never make resolutions but I am making an intention (a much softer and more pliable thing) to try not to buy any new books but to read the books I have.

On that note one of my final book purchases of 2022 is the book for January by Caroline Oriado Perez. I hope you will consider joining me from 15th January for the read.

Caroline Criado Perez, who wrote the book Invisible Women, about how our world is designed for men, has a newsletter. It's funny and snarky, but also interesting and at times infuriating. This week's newsletter is mainly about research into (remedies against) Alzheimer's.

Did you know that women are more likely than men to suffer from Alzheimer's? Now guess where the bulk of the research is aimed at...

I read Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez some time ago. Trying to use voice to text when I couldn't type in the earliest days after my broken wrist reminded me that gender bias is built into that system + so many others.

"AI systems misrecognize women’s voices and faces more often than men’s, which makes it more difficult for women to use these technologies and enjoy their benefits." ‐Rosalie Waelen and Michał Wieczorek

(此处 cue 里提到的 Is snow cleaning gender biased?
