Iranian authorities have launched a new, accelerated wave of executions in which at least 251 people were executed between January 1 and June 30, 2022.
Most of those executed (146 people) were sentenced to death for murder in 2022, with records showing that the execution process systematically continues after highly unfair procedures. At least 86 people were executed for drug offenses, for which the death penalty should never be imposed under international law. On July 23, 2022, authorities in Fars province publicly executed a man. It was the first public execution after a two-year hiatus during the Corona pandemic.

Diana Al Tahawi, deputy director of Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa office, says, "In the first six months of this year, Iranian authorities executed on average at least one person per day.
The government apparatus is committing a heinous attack on the right to human life by carrying out massacres on a massive scale across Iran. The overwhelming number of executions in Iran in the first half of this year is reminiscent of 2015, which saw another shocking increase in the number of executions.

At least 65 people (26 percent) of those executed in 2022 belonged to the Baluch minority, a minority that makes up about 5 percent of Iran's population. More than half of them (38) were executed for drug offenses.

Mass executions in Balochistan
The government of the Islamic Republic has launched a new wave of executions in Iran's Balochistan province, which has caused concern and a strong reaction from human rights activists. For example, only on June 6, this year (2022), 11 men and a woman were executed in Zahedan Central Prison. Six of these prisoners were charged with drug-related offenses, and six others were executed on "murder" charges.
