After dinner, Joyce and his protege, Samuel Beckett, “get pretty tight,” Norris says. On the way home, frustrated by the frequency of requests, Joyce and Beckett are making for pit stops, the carriage driver decides not to wait for Joyce’s drinking buddy to return from the pissoir, and leaves Beckett “ingloriously abandoned on the outskirts of Paris”.

According to David Norris, a Dublin senator and a leading Joyce scholar, the first official celebration of Bloomsday is held on its twenty-fifth anniversary on 16 June 1929. That night, Joyce is the guest of honour at a dinner party held at Les Vaux de Cernay, a village near Versailles. 1/2

On 16 June 1924 friends send Joyce, who is in hospital, a bouquet of white and blue hydrangeas. He writes in his notebook: “Today 16 of June 1924 twenty years after. Will anybody remember this date?”

16th June is Bloomsday, a commemoration and celebration of the life of James Joyce during which the events of Ulysses (set on 16 June 1904) are relived. Joyce chose the date because it was the date of his first outing with Nora Barnacle when they walked to Ringsend.

William Butler Yeats was born in Sandymount in County Dublin on 13 June 1865. He was a poet, dramatist and writer. One of the foremost figures of 20th-century literature, he was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival. In December 1923, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for his always inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation".

Finished this monster of a biography of my literary hero James Joyce. Found it fair with a balance of negative and positive and insightful to an artist’s life.
Now more than ever I feel he was #autistic.
I also want to read Finnegan’s Wake again soon.

Tribute to Maurice Scully, 1952-2023, by Trevor Joyce. #IrishLiterature #modernism #poetry 'But if, as I say, the primary mode of this poetry is of close unblinking attention, then it is frequently varied by the incursions of an all too familiar practical world of electricity bills, bank managers, and other shifty manipulators, which distract from the minutiae of the world and the practice of notation.' https://stingingfly.org/2023/03/14/in-remembrance-of-maurice-scully/?fbclid=IwAR1L7QnS_yTCMfVpw64EaQQEvfhAqZoeCtg5cAoN3bxwasYKJXyaJEg6Eno

At Swim-Two-Birds, a novel by writer Brian O’Nolan, writing under the pseudonym Flann O’Brien was first published on 13th March 1939. It is widely considered to be O’Brien’s masterpiece, and one of the most sophisticated examples of metafiction.

Roddy Doyle’s Two Pints is dialog of two guys sitting in a pub and talking daily bullshit. Each chapter is dialog only and brisk. Mostly funny and sometimes heartwarming.
Previous there were 3 volumes but now they’re combined along with a play and zoom episodes, which have yet been published before.
Some brilliant Irish literature that will have you calling everyone a cunt.
