My attempts to record something this morning went badly awry (including an eventual computer reboot), but here's a lovely new hop jig I'm working on learning, Hannah Harris’s "The Dog Who Chased the Ducks”, played (and explained) by Hannah herself: learn.hannahharrisceol.com/hop

I think I posted this one once before on flute, but it's one of my favorite slides, and here I'm celebrating getting it worked out on box. This is "Across the Road”, which I got from a 1949 recording of Paddy Cronin. He played it in Am (and that's how I've normally played it on flute) but here I've transposed it to Em because that key fits the C#/D box better.

In 1978, NRK TV in Norway did this excellent program on Irish traditional music on radio, TV, and recordings. About half of it shows the Bothy Band recording their 3rd album and playing live on RTE television. An amazing trip to the past!

For anyone wondering whether I fixed that reed problem with my concertina, I can report that playing my instrument doesn't make me nuts any more. While I can still hear the buzz/sizzle if I listen very hard for it, the worst of the bad sound is gone.

Part of the issue was the harmonics of this particular concertina -- it definitely has its own little mystery spot -- but good instructional videos and advice helped me banish most of the problem.

Some of my bestest internet buddies are being haunted by drum wielding dunces today... And I feel for them so I'm gonna post this drum wielder... Cos this kinda drumming is fab...

incidentally the word Bodhràn comes from a root that means "deaf"! Though it has wider meaning too...

Anyway, enjoy!

I've been trying to find a name for this tune for awhile now. And, as these things often go, I stumbled onto it while I was looking for something else.

'The New Road' reminds me of a condensed version of 'Farewell to Erin.' Or maybe what someone might come up with if they were trying to play 'Farewell' but didn't remember the tune very well.

@thesession I use a $20 USD iOS app called forScore, which is a glorified PDF reader. All the tunes we regularly play at our session are in there. There’s a Dashboard where you can make Reports and one tells you which tunes you’ve played the most in the last month, and exactly how much time you’ve spent on them. I pick the lowest one on the list and start there, so as to make sure I don’t just practice my favorites all the time.

What I'm learning: The Mortgage Burn, a great reel composed by Cape Breton piano player Gordon MacLean. I first heard this tune on the 'Crystal Clear' album by the late Cape Breton fiddler Jerry Holland.

I'm finding it a harder tune to learn on concertina than it was on the fiddle. This version in a teaching video is pretty much how I've heard it played in Cape Breton.

Went to a big Irish session yesterday night, one that I’ve been meaning to go to for a while but was scared.

Cello isn’t really expected at these but I was really well received, especially when I played one of their signature tune that one of the guys there composed.

'The Green Fields of Glentown,' a big reel written by the late Tommy Peoples.

One of the hardest tunes I've ever learned. It took me forever to wrap my brain around all thecstuff that's going on in it.
