to add on to this list (and article), it is good to read this article written in 2009 by Shaykh Husain Kadodia (from South Africa), explaining what the state of commercial publishing was like with regards to Islamic texts, their verification and the cutting of corners:

attahawi.com/2009/05/12/unders

It is for this reason that I disagree with those who say copyright is not applicable in Islamic law (based on this blatant plagiarism).

It is astonishing how many books on the shari`a address socio-legal questions seemingly only on the basis of normative texts. The result is drastically different intuitions about "what really happened" in law and society, with very little appeal to descriptive evidence. Of course we don't have nearly enough evidence, I know! But we do have some (I think of books by Kristen Stilt and by Lev Weitz as positive examples here), and it could be used more.

Now that I'm back in the semester, more teaching will appear, and less text editing.

It always surprises me how textbooks that give excerpts of the Qur'an give such a narrow range of excerpts. (And so predictably, either ethical exhortations to care for the vulnerable or the interreligious polemics, depending on the textbook author's political leanings.) The Qur'an is a very diverse book! I had to create my own selection to show some greater breadth.

What's my teaching goal? Mostly I want students to realize the Qur'an is complex and that before they say, "Well the Qur'an says X" they should stop and read not just an isolated verse or two, and ideally they should engage with the (commentary) tradition. I teach against soundbites.

I really enjoyed Zachary V. Wright's "Realizing Islam" and recommend it to anyone doing research on the early modern period (especially in North Africa) - not only on , but on and in general.

I have an issue w.r.t finding an authentic copy of Tafsir at-Tabari that is digitized.

Shamela has 2 copies:

shamela.ws/book/43/126
shamela.ws/book/7798/179

But both copies have mistakes in comparison to this PDF on archive:

archive.org/details/TafsirTaba

I only reviewed a small piece (basmala) and found 2-3 word errors that alter the meaning. I also cannot tell if the PDF is right or the Shamela versions.

Any guidance on this?

Illustrations from the magazine "L'Illustration" for the Exposition coloniale internationale 1931 in Paris.

This issue of the magazine is a great resource that I found in our library and will discuss with my students tomorrow in the seminar on the history of Morocco.

@jonathanwyrtzen has based his chapter 2 in "Making Morocco" on the structure of the Moroccan pavilion - very interesting reading, very well done! Looking forward to the discussion in the seminar!

The diversity of that can be observed in our world is linked to the claim of living in a global , in a world society. The book underpins this claim with numerous excursions into Islamic history. It criticises the view that can be equated with westernisation and considers different projects of specifically Islamic modernities as integral parts of world society.

From this perspective, the study contributes to the "provincialisation" of European history in contemporary social scientific thought. Contrary to the theories of associated with the call for the provincialisation of Europe, however, this book adheres to essential traditions of classical sociology. It thus aims to make a contribution to the social theoretical discussion on modernity.

This book considers an important and largely neglected area of Islamic law by exploring how medieval Muslim jurists resolved criminal cases that could not be proven beyond a doubt, calling into question a controversial popular notion about Islamic law today, which is that Islamic law is a divine legal tradition that has little room for discretion or doubt, particularly in Islamic criminal law.

Through examination of legal, historical, and theological sources, and a range of illustrative case studies, this book shows that Muslim jurists developed a highly sophisticated and regulated system for dealing with Islam's unique concept of doubt, which evolved from the seventh to the sixteenth century.
