"The vultures of capitalism, colonialism, imperialism, and nation-states continue to circle over the Indigenous and campesino communities and lands of so-called southern Mexico. The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is the latest feeding ground. There, a multiplicity of national and international state and private interests seek the imposition by any means necessary of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. The objective: connect the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans with a modernized train and industrial corridor, facilitate the extraction, production, and transportation of capital in the region, reorganize time and space, exploit land, labor, and resources."

"The State, Accumulation, and Oaxaca’s Earthquake Survivors: Three Mechanisms of Inequality" by Alessandro Morosin

"The Mexican state’s response facilitated capital accumulation while intensifying indigenous-campesino grievances against megaprojects and resource extraction. State policies in Oaxaca’s Isthmus of Tehuantepec during the fall of 2017 reinforced social inequality by way of three key mechanisms: neglect, dispossession, and pacification. Making sense of the way state institutions exercised power during this disaster benefits from combining a critical perspective on global capitalism with long-standing frameworks of cultural genocide and internal colonialism."

As the Mexican state, backed by the U.S. and outside investors, attempts to build the Interoceanic Corridor - a mess of modernized ports, highways, high-speed railroads, industrial parks, and militarization linking the Pacific to the Atlantic - it will be important to keep an eye on and extend solidarity to the struggles (largely Indigenous) unfolding in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca and Veracruz.

While the project has been in the works for years, and political divisions among the opposition have cost valuable time and energy, now that construction is beginning in earnest, so is on-the-ground direct action against this neoliberal megaproject of death and displacement.

Yesterday in Oaxaca, members of the Union of Indigenous Communities of the Northern Isthmus (UCIZONI) blocked construction work on railroad tracks for the Interoceanic Corridor. In response, the Mexican state sent in Marines to remove them.

AMLO decrees expropriation of communal lands in Oaxaca for construction of industrial parks

"On Thursday, February 2, Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador published two decrees making official the expropriation of 1,018 acres of communal lands in Ciudad Ixtepec, and 1,240 acres in Santa María Mixtequilla, both in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca. These lands will be the future sites of two industrial parks as part of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec."
