“According to Joyce’s brother Stanislaus, the Irish writer “couldn’t stand” the Scot’s work. Be that as it may, Joyce kept a copy of The Bride of Lammermoor in his Trieste library and, in 1924, Joyce memorised 500 lines of The Lady of the Lake while recovering after one of his many eye operations.”

Have had the pleasure of dealing with some erudite people recently. I'm revisiting a stockpile of old podcasts and came across #FrankDelaney in the Re: Joyce # Podcast. He dissects the #JamesJoyce #Ulysses. An utter delight as he explains the multiple meanings in the text. So clever, brilliant fun.

I visited my mum today and came away with these three books of my dad’s from the loft. There are so many books up there, but these are especially meaningful because my dad encouraged me to read Joyce as a teenager, and it’s one of so many things I’m grateful to him for.

They’re 1950s impressions, not first editions, and are worn, marked and rich with the biblichor of 70 years; but they’re treasures of inexpressible value to me and a small connection to him now he’s gone.
