There has long been an reluctance in #ComicBooks and #superhero media to mention political topics. Other than #FrankMiller's original #DarkKnight stories, political stances were verboten, back to a #JFK cameo in 1963.

But instead of being viewed as an endorsement of liberal democrat policies by Big Blue, it incorrectly established #Superman as a conformist & establishmentarian.

And as #fascism has taken over establishment #GOP politics, he is now silenced by "bipartisanship."

Robinson's support for Nixon makes sense. Robinson would have likely been a Republican. He was from Georgia, so would have known southern #whitesupremacy. And it was the Brooklyn Dodgers willing to break the color barrier to sign him. His allegiance would be to the northern base party.

But, the practical value of switching to #JFK's progressive Democrats also made sense. Imagine, Black people as Democrats!

14/23 #RichardMNixon, the Republican California senator (though born in NY) who had been vice-president under #DwightDEisenhower, ran for president back in 1960, losing to #JFK.

He lost the 1964 nomination to #BarryGoldwater (noted as a significant conservative shift for the Republican party).

Nixon ran again in 1968 and (finally) won — but just barely; to strengthen his administration, he needed an angle, coming up with his #SouthernStrategy.
