🎬 's "The Black Dahlia" (2006) is in rotation @ Starz. I've watched bits of it a few times. The based upon the 1987 , adapted for the screen by Ellroy and .

The sexism (true to the film's late-40s setting) and violence were too much for me, but I enjoyed and 's performances. And and make a cute couple.

Cop (1988)

Cop isn't action focused, it is entirely a character study of a desperate, corrupt man painted around the background of catching a killer and the wake of upset he leaves in the pursuit.

Today in Labor History March 8, 1971: The Citizens Committee to Investigate the FBI stole 1,000 documents from the FBI office in Media, Pennsylvania. They later released the documents to newspapers, revealing the FBI’s COINTELPRO program, harassing and attacking political dissidents in the U.S. According to Noam Chomsky, 40% of the documents were dedicated to political surveillance. James Ellroy wrote about the burglary in his 2009 novel, “Blood’s a Rover.”

It's tough to wrap your mind around the work of James Ellroy, so over the top, and I'm thinking of the Underworld USA Trilogy here, in which the US is portrayed as a dumpster fire of pathological criminality and supreme badness. Of course that is true, in a far more complex dynamic than Ellroy portrays.

The tough part is that throughout these three books are several queer male characters, of various races, who are, almost singly, blinding beacons of goodness, even if that goodness comes at a price. They may be the only good souls in the trilogy. (Bayard Rustin is one of them.) (There's also a portrayal of Sal Mineo that is, to say the least, less than flattering.)

Anyway, Ellroy was once locked up in LA County Jail, and a Mexican drag queen named Peaches beat the living shit out of him. I think he, Ellroy, was grateful for that ass-kicking.

I've read the trilogy at least three times through. They're brilliant, ugly and, in their own way, by the end of the last, 'Blood's a Rover," transcendent.

They're also beautifully written, but will rock n' roll with that some other time.
