I continue to explore Fuboku Kosakai’s works (小酒井不木). This time I read 安死術 (1926) which, as the title indicates, is about euthanasia. Like all the other stories I read by this author, it was impossible to put down once started.

I finished 『ひげのある男たち』by Shoji Yuki (結城昌治), the first book in the Detective Sergeant Gohara series (郷原部長刑事) and the author’s debut novel.

It’s a great whodunnit with a lot of deductions and a good ending. There are also a lot of funny moments too as sergeant Gohara’s patience and amour-propre are put to the test during this investigation.

I’ll continue the series, the next one is 長い長い眠り.

I read ある自殺者の手記 by
Fuboku Kosakai (小酒井不木). The outcome was predictable (the story was similar to another one), but waiting for it was part of the enjoyment.

I saw the word 得恋者 (とくれんしゃ) - the winner in a love rivalry - as opposed to 失恋者 (しつれんしゃ).

Though 失恋 is quite common, I don’t think I’ve seen 得恋 very often.

I just read the short story 青服の男 (あおふくのおとこ) by Saburo Koga (甲賀 三郎), and I enjoyed it very much. The end was predictable, but the story was very pleasant to read nonetheless.

Word learnt today: 鳶色 (とびいろ). It’s a reddish brown, named after the brown feathers of the black kite.

Interestingly, the Wikipedia page says that most Japanese colours are named after plants and vegetation, and it’s more uncommon to find a colour named after an animal.

Analysis of the remains has $revealed a new branch of the human family tree that points to a previously #unknown_sister_group more closely related to modern humans than the Neanderthals.

The extraordinary fossil has been named a #new_human_species, #Homo_longi or #Dragon_man, by #Chinese researchers, although other experts are more cautious about the designation.

“I think this is one of the most important #finds of the past 50 years,” said Prof Chris Stringer, research leader at the Natural History #Museum in #London, who worked on the project. “It’s a wonderfully #preserved_fossil.”

The skull appears to have a remarkable #backstory. According to the researchers, it was originally found in 1933 by Chinese labourers building a #bridge over the #Songhua_River in #Harbin, in China’s northernmost province, #Heilongjiang, during the #Japanese occupation.
