My course "Introduction to Japanese History" is heading towards . So let's see a of the times.

In 1894/96, Yamagata Aritomo built in using a reward for his role in the Sino-Japanese war. The garden's Western building also served for a conference in which 4 elder statesmen prepared for the Russo-Japanese war.

Newspapers presented Murin-an as a political site. In a caricature of 1899, you can see pondering a railway project in China.

A very unusual today. Some years ago, I went to + visited , a 1950s suburb. Citizens are allowed to create community gardens on public lots.

When I arrived at the garden, the “owner” was working the ground, and I got to interview him. He told me that he had never been to Japan but had always been fascinated with bonsai. So he decided to apply for a lot and turn it into a Japanese garden! The garden showed a lot of dedication and was built on a low budget.

There is a tiny in the backyard of the in . The museum is about Asian art. Its founder Émile Guimet was an industrialist who, in 1876, traveled the Far East, buying up objects like Chinese porcelain, Buddhist statues, and all sorts of Japanese art.

In 2001 a was added in the backyard of the historic Hôtel d'Heidelbach, an annex building. The museum's introduction smacks a bit of culturalism (too much talk about harmony), but the garden is lovely.

@JapanProf Interesting point about お茶屋! First, the gardener of that site needed to make some money. So the "tea house" was about revenue. Inside it looked more like a typical coffee house. Here is an image of royal family members visiting the Düsseldorf 1904 and drinking coffee (a critical stamp of approval for the site!). The garden designer probably had no idea about tea houses (small) and tea houses (お茶屋). Information on Japan in 1904 was still sketchy in the German Reich.
