Two friends of mine are currently on an extended stay in Japan. They have started a new project, reading locally written short stories and then travelling to explore the setting of the story. This is their first video. Give it a look, and maybe boost them with a subscribe or a comment.

This is going to sound silly but, after translating a lot of the correspondence between and Haruo Sato in date order I reached the final 'letter' I had planned: Sato's eulogy for Dazai. And for a moment, I forgot he was dead, and had to take a breath.

Up until that point I'd been reading him say he wanted to die, but also that he wanted to live, and imagining it to be a real battle the outcome of which wasn't yet known. I was rooting for him.

Happy birthday, Osamu ! This time last year I was able to share a few short stories of his I had translated, this year I am delighted to say that I am publishing my first book of translations, Retrogression - a study of Dazai’s early attempt at the Akutagawa prize.

All four short stories will be released into the public domain, free to read, whereas the book will contain a few extras such as the letters, translator’s notes, biographies and references.

Satō Haruo on Osamu:

"He has the kind of romantic spirit of a selfish, good-for-nothing wastrel, but more than that, he has let this seep deep down into the very marrow of his being. The uninhibited yet fragile self flows out of control, and it is the lot in life of this particular variety of man to continually contemplate himself until his self-awareness becomes intertwined with his bones."

Three strong personalities, mothers and daughters, Japanese traditions, fighting old age all the way, Minae Mizumura's 'Inheritance from Mother' is an intense novel of 'vexatious spirit' Noriko, her two daughters, and complex family stories.

From the inside cover: "Soseki Netsuke had originally intended to write no more than a short story, but...its immediate success encouraged him to develop further installments...Though the total book is held together by the continuing theme of a nameless cat's observations on upper middle class Japanese society of the Meiji era, its essence is in the humor and the sardonic truth of those various observations."

Thanks, past me, I definitely know what you mean by "sheep book" 😑 Really appreciate your thorough referencing system in this difficult time.

From Soseki Natsume's "I am a Cat" (1905/6): "A man who sees himself magnified by his display of determination is, in fact, diminished in the public estimation by that demonstration of his crass willfulness... to his dying day, the mulish bigot regards his dull opinionatrety as somehow meritorious... he never realizes he has made himself a despised laughing stock..."

I'm reading 月鱼(Fish on the Moon) by 三浦紫苑(Shion Miura), and this book is recommended to common readers and 耽美(boy's love) fans.
Our protagonist is a shopkeeper of an old bookstore, and he has causal relationships with his childhood friends. One day, they went to county M to purchase second-hand books.....
The style of languages is plain, but the atmosphere is unique, where old bookstores, Japanese gardens and bonds between two persons makes romantics.

Done reading "The Cat who Saved the Books" from Sosuke Natsukawa and loved a lot.
Now is the time to start with one Japanese Classics: "Snow Country" (in Spanish) from Yasunari Kawabata, published in 1948. On the way!
