Working on a new cover for my refreshed Folk Remedy pitch! Still WIP, I think it’s getting close but I have the last 10-15% shine still to go.
I wanted to make a cover that instantly gives you the vibe of what I’m going for within the story, which is easier said than done! In the sketch they were originally going to be in front of a shelf of figurines, but I liked the idea of doing shadows on a shoji screen.

Peach is arguably the fan favourite of Folk Remedy and is the most chaotic creature. I love her very much, she some of the most fun to write and draw because of her unhinged energy.

This is Ember, a yokai Maple releases from a seal after 300-ish years of being trapped in a lantern.
Ember is a huge flirt and honestly a bit mean. They come across as very self-interested without caring too much about those around them.
Their true motives remain murky from Maple. As they spend time together, Maple realises there’s more to this yokai than just their flashy surface.

I’ve been taking it slow with comic work through most of November, but I’m feeling the spark return, so I’m looking forward to making some good progress on my Folk Remedy sample!
I’ve re-shaped it quite a lot since it was last on submission. It has a revamped and streamlined plot, a new approach to colour and refined character designs.

Nekomata, copied from Toriyama Sekien’s illustration. I love nekomata because if a cat gets old enough or big enough or fat enough, its tail will split and it will become a nekomata.
Nekomata have powers and can cause all kinds of mischief, including shape shifting and playing pranks on humans.

#art I’ve wanted to do some redraws of Toriyama Sekien’s #yokai for a while, and I’m glad my current project has given me an excuse to do so. I’m especially pleased with how the Kappa turned out (froggy-like friend on the left).
Yokai are so fun, mysterious, silly, angry, quirky and sad. There’s endless texture in exploring them and their role throughout history within Japanese society. I love #Japanesefolklore!
