Why do all Japanese videos for foreigners sound like this.... (I'm sure I would murder the guy doing the chanting if my yard was nearby :P)

@SerenaJ has brought excellent news! The #MuséeAlbertKahn has made its fantastic collection of early color photos public!
This BBC docu explored Kahn's great effort in 2008:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007nfn8/episodes/guide
And best of all: there are even two #JapaneseGardens at the musée in #BoulogneBillancourt (close to Paris). A historical one from Kahn's times and a fascinating, playful postmodern one by #TeamZoo!

This spring, I visited the magnificent #ParcOriental of #Maulévrier in the Loire Valley for a conference and saw the site. Many #JapaneseGardens in the West claim to be the largest, but this probably *is* the biggest in Europe.
Alexandre Marcel laid out the initial Japanese garden for a prosperous local industrialist. M. became famous in 1900 for building the #TourDuMonde and the Cambodian pavilion at the #ExpositionUniverselle in #Paris. He even brought parts of the pavilion to Maulévrier!

In 1910, the Japanese government staged the #JapanBritishExhibition in #London. Two #JapaneseGardens were part of the fair. A statement from the Jap. organizers is interesting: "The gardens are not purely Japanese. They manifest the good feeling existing between the horticulturalists of England and Japan; equally they symbolize the alliance between our two countries…"
However, visitors, without a doubt, assumed that these gardens were fully authentic and not just a tool of #CulturalDiplomacy.

@paulkleiman Oh, cool, thanks for pointing that out. I have only skimmed a bit through it. But Monty seems to do a great job. I have seen a garden I like very much (Kyu-Furukawa teien), usually not part of such features. Also, he interviewed a friend and colleague who knows everything and, most of all, does not essentialize #JapaneseGardens. I certainly will have to watch these two hours! Thanks for that!!
One of 3 #Philly #JapaneseGardens is part of the Morris Arboretum. John Morris had made a fortune in iron and steel. He + his sister Lydia built the estate.
In 1905 they added a JGarden. Thanks to the world’s fairs, JGardens were the latest fad. Today the garden is less pretentious than many JG – and that’s why I like it! Just a tiny patch with a Buddha in the shadows.
In 1913 the Japanese Overlook was added to another part of the Arboretum. It features the famous 3 wise monkeys 🙉🙊🙈.
In the early 20th century, large fairs in the West not only feature #JapaneseGardens as something exotic. They also often lightened up with "Japanese illuminations." For example, here is a postcard from #Düsseldorf 1904. At first, a local newspaper was not sure about this event and dubbed it "Chinese or Indian" illumination. However, after the fair's organizers did more advertising, journalists did not mix up things from the East anymore. In any case, paper lanterns were popular with the public!
Though I am researching #JapaneseGardens, our one is chaotic and needs more care – with one outstanding exception!
In 1904, #Düsseldorf saw the first #JGarden in Germany at the Internat. Art and Great Garden Fair. The organizers wanted to hire someone Japanese to design it but failed. So they took a photo of a garden in Tokyo from Josiah #Conder’s book on #Japanesegardens and rebuilt it. A strange birdhouse had to replace a lantern!
For the restaurant, the organizers hired Japanese waitresses. They wore #kimonos for the authenticating effect - see the visitors staring down at them! The imperialist gaze…

If you follow me you will see lots of photos of my garden & view. It is a kalidescope, always changing. It feeds my soul. #photogaphy is a passion. The #vineyards are #BorrowedLandscape as in #JapaneseGardens. Feel free to reply with photos of your #gardens large or small.

I am entirely drained today after I worked super hard to meet a deadline for a revision yesterday. Luckily, I don't have to work that hard the following days, and my next class is on Monday. However, I am still looking for ways to recreate and recharge! Maybe a Tröt (toot) about #JapaneseGardens tomorrow or so will help!May
Fujikawaguchiko last summer! And yes, it's a Godzilla head what are you seeing in the japanese garden xD

I have just learned that we could upload and use our own #emojis here. Now, I found a #JapaneseGardens emoji set for LINE, which only costs 0.99€. The moment I have figured out how to buy and implement this beyond LINE, Mastodon will change for me!!! #AcademicPleasures #popculture

Sometimes #JapaneseGardens live in museums! The #TeaHouse + #Temple + garden at the #Philly Museum of Art is a fine example. The architect Ōgi Rodō originally built the teahouse in Tokyo (1917), and the museum bought it in 1928, along with the temple.
Ōgi was close to a circle of Mitsui top managers immersed in tea ceremony. Therefore the teahouse is part of modern elites re-inventing tradition and not so much an example of an age-old practice unchanged. #日本庭園

Believe it or not – when #Tokyo was still called #Edo (before 1868), it was a green megapolis. The local lords (daimyō) had three or more residences in the shogunates capital, adorned with extensive gardens. With 300 lords, we have about 1.000 #DaimyōGardens! You can see them on the upper left and the bottom of here. Unfortunately, only a handful of these gardens remain. The rest was used as building land! #日本庭園 #JapaneseGardens
