Two more full-length shots of Jean Harlow that show the entire nautical dress I posted the day before last—these two are from a 1934 Clarence Bull fashion shoot as opposed to the Hurrell session I already shared. Harlow modeled various ensembles furnished by I. Magnin, which appeared in Photoplay that summer. #JeanHarlow #classicfilm #1930s

Spencer Tracy, Jean Harlow, and Joseph Calleia in a still from RIFFRAFF (1936), taken in the fall of 1935. I’m an unabashed supporter of Harlow’s brownette era—I love the way the shade softened her appearance and enhanced her natural beauty. The darker curls paired with this girlish floral Dolly Tree gown make for such a lovely look (the cap sleeves and velvet bow are flattering touches). #JeanHarlow #1930s #classicfilm

I don’t think I’m alone in having a love for film artwork inspired by real portraits. Here’s Jean Harlow and Cary Grant in a Ted Allan publicity photo for SUZY (1936) taken on April 30, 1936—and the pair depicted in poster artwork. #JeanHarlow #CaryGrant #classicfilm

Realized I was living this DINNER AT EIGHT scene last night while sifting through two boxes of chocolates I got for Valentine’s, in bed, taking bites and putting ones I didn’t like back in the box. #JeanHarlow #classicfilm
From my collection: A rare behind-the-scenes candid of (L to R) cinematographer George Folsey, director Victor Fleming, Rosalind Russell, and Jean Harlow filming RECKLESS (1935) on location in Franklin Canyon, December 1934. #JeanHarlow #classicfilm
Jean Harlow descends from her dressing room in this one-of-a-kind candid clip shot by comedian and documentarian Ken Murray—taken during the filming of DINNER AT EIGHT in the spring of 1933. Harlow’s wearing one of her character Kitty’s iconic feathered Adrian robes. #JeanHarlow #1930s #classicfilm

Happy Wednesday! No occasion whatsoever. Here’s a chic CHINA SEAS (1935) era publicity portrait of our favorite girl in an outfit I wish I knew more about—love the way she’s posing as if buttoning her cuff. The curls, the saucy little hat, the dress pin, the brows—what a simple yet complete and classy look.
I’ve not found a surefire photographer credit for this photo, but I’d imagine it’s by one of her regular guys like Clarence Sinclair Bull. #JeanHarlow #1930s
Here’s an example of Harlow-Gable verbal sparring that gets me every time, from RED DUST—Harlow (as Vantine) gets into it with Gable (as Dennis) after an unwelcome spiel on the history of Roquefort cheese. #JeanHarlow #ClarkGable #classicfilm

Can’t forget this classic: Harlow out celebrating New Year’s ‘33 at the Club New Yorker (later Ciro’s).

Happy New Year! Pictured: a George Hurrell promotional portrait of Jean for RIFFRAFF (1936) taken in fall 1935, superimposed onto a choice celebratory token for 1936.

One of the self-doubting Harlow quotes Bette is referencing (there’s quite a few, actually) is from an eye-opening interview with Caroline S. Hoyt that appeared in the February ‘37 issue of Modern Screen magazine. Here’s the full text—quote can be found on the third page. #JeanHarlow #classicfilm

I am well aware Bette Davis did not mince words, but this passage in a ‘65 interview with her and ODH had me clutching my chest like I was dying of a heart attack.

Outside of this (first) chance snapshot, there’s not too much tying Dunne and Harlow together, but I’m a big fan of both and their respective acting styles. Both had such a fun flair for comedy, it would have been great to see them together in a screwball.
What’s your favorite Irene Dunne film? My choices are a little odd, but I love her in LADY IN A JAM and ROBERTA. #JeanHarlow #IreneDunne #botd #classicfilm

Born on this day: one of the most wholesome comediennes I can think of, the lovely Irene Dunne (December 20, 1898 — September 4, 1990).
I don’t know the exact context of this picture of Dunne and Harlow with Jackie Cooper, but it’s for sure from late ‘32 or early ‘33. All three were making films at MGM during this time period, and the studio code in the lower left corner tells me somebody corralled them for a publicity photo. #JeanHarlow #IreneDunne #classicfilm #botd
