Nerd sniped myself and stayed up way too late updating my #RaspberryPi 2 to the latest OS version, so I could get #nushell running on it.

Also played around with the #jellyfin media server which was surprisingly easy to get started.

Still figuring out a safe/secure way to ssh into the pi from outside the home and safely expose the pi to the internet at large.

Doing a #ReverseProxy and putting a #VPN on the router are tasks that are not quite as straight forward.

Almost switched over to #Jellyfin from #Plex. Just have to decide if external access to my library is something I still desire or not to go through the hassle of getting new certs for the reverse proxy.

2/ Some of the devices used are weirdly cross cultural. When they first labd abd might be the only three alive, the still-steaming plate of food in the restaurant conveys much.

Unrelated, #today I spun up a #jellyfin server for a few miscellaneous local needs. So far, I’m a fan. #FOSS is so much easier than it once was, and that’s a critical part of gaining wider acceptance. Hardest part was rebuilding a machine to a rolling distro so I could have drivers and kernel that are recent.

If you want to save some disk space, you can look into #Tdarr to convert your videos from x264 to x265.

@readsteven @nantucketebooks half a year back my wife asked me if she could rent a movie from a VOD provider. I explained that we actually own a physical copy of that. I started doing research and then spent around two months converting all our physical media to MKV files and putting them on #Jellyfin in our home network.
Since then we've been enjoying our own movie collection again. 😁

@mhamzahkhan Consider also though, WHY is it transcoding? I ditched Plex for #Jellyfin specifically because the Plex clients made a lot of stupid decisions about needing to transcode on player hardware that was 100% capable of playing the streams natively.
It's 2021, just about anything bought in the last ~4 years can do native x264/x265 decode.

@idanoo Do you have family/friends you were sharing your #Plex libraries with? If so, how are you approaching sharing with #Jellyfin (if at all)?
I have Jellyfin and Plex both pointed at the same libraries. Jellyfin for self consumption, and Plex purely for sharing with parents etc. Would love to switch it off though.
