A POET'S PANEGYRIC.
Joaquin Miller's Opinion of #Oakland.
"I have bought 100 acres of land near Fruit Vale," said Joaquin Miller, the poet, to a TRIBUNE representative, Saturday. "The price was about $18,000. I have determined that Oakland is the most charming residence place in the world, and I have traveled considerably. I propose to pass the remainder of my days here. The land that I have acquired is delightfully situated, overlooking Oakland, Alameda, the bay, San Francisco, and the Marin hills. The Golden Gate is distinctly visible. Oakland and its suburbs form the finest home site on earth. There is much to be done, however, to bring this place up to the standard as regards streets, sidewalks and sewers. Natural features, climate, scenery, locality, and topography it has, and to an unrivaled degree. Art must supplant nature and vie with it in producing splendid effects. Oakland's streets should be of asphalt- a noiseless, dustless, and mudless material.

@colburn I'll be doing work, clearing these trees with other volunteers. The city does not clear trees off Joaquin Miller Park trails, unless they are reachable via asphalt. Let me know if you want to help. Consider joining BTCEB if you aren't already a member. "There is no they, they is us."

What's the story behind this SAVE OAKLAND'S SEQUOIAS pin? Read about it here:
https://fastestslowguy.blogspot.com/2020/04/oakland-sequoia-mountain-park-part-1.html
"To have stricken of immediately 20,000 buttons at a cost of $100 to be sold for one dollar each, these buttons to bear a picture of a redwood tree, the letters "S. O. S. and "Vote Yes, August 29." The initial cost of the buttons was underwritten by Fred E. Reed, president of the Oakland real estate board."

@fondoffawns @redsage oh, Cindy, possible you're related to Charles / Carlos? Been meaning to research Silva / Jackson and share it on my blog, fastestslowguy.blogspot.com. There was a cluster of families living near Redwood Peak. The Classens were east of the Silvas, at the peak. They were related to the Zerwers. Both have their names carved into the sandstone at Redwood Peak.

#Portuguese went through cultural assimilation. Carlos Silva became Charles Silver. 'Silva canyon' probably led to that residence, or the Tatlow Jackson residence. Might have been same family. Or Father McNally...

After school practice with #OaklandDevo; we had one hour to ride a lap of #JoaquinMillerPark, do a tiny bit of trail work, take some #BTCEB bells, trash the be kiosk with a team sticker and have fun. Two coaches, 13 kids, smiles, fun times, safe return.

John Roberts and I made a #map of all the #stormdamage in #JoaquinMillerPark. We are keeping it up to date and sharing it with the Park Supervisor, so that city employees can come remove the more than 63 #trees down on #trails in the #park.
If you see trees down, or other storm damage, and they're not on this map, please tell me where, ideally with a photo and gps location, and I'll add it to the map.

Toured the three fall-line trails in #JoaquinMillerPark with two people from the Santa Cruz Mountain Trails Stewardship, as guests and at the request of the Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay today, looking at storm damage and opportunities for improvement. Park Supervisor is in favor of the work.
Did some trail work in #JoaquinMillerPark this past weekend, with #BTCEB and #NorCalLeague coaches. That's my friend Stewart. Notice the water flow in the before and after pictures. We also cut and reopened a bunch of trail drains and cleared some trees.

I am a #history junkie, especially for the place where I live, #Oakland, the #OaklandHills, #JoaquinMillerPark, the #Redwoods.
I transcribed this 1920s article from the #OaklandTribune, part of a really cool series called Ye Olden Oakland Days, describing the history of Lincoln avenue, its residents, the Golden Gate and its naming by John C. #Fremont, and a lot of other interesting information. This would be interesting to #SanFrancisco people.

Part 2, in which our heroes prevail, a bond measure passes, and while the acreage is half of what it was, Sequoia Mountain Park is created, later to become Joaquin Miller Park
"A redwood grove on a hill which overlooks San Francisco Bay! A woods carpeted by the years and possessed of vast silences! Here is something which Oakland, now and in the years to come, may cherish."
