Even more fun was realizing how much better for it was a volume where we didn’t just submit individual essays but discussed among ourselves how we might ensure they gave our colleague something coherent as a whole and something worthwhile in its own right. It was a lovely reminder that while we might get strident at times (err, no, excuse me #JonathanSwift was absolutely not a #Jacobite, ever), those of us with an interest in the man, the politics, and the society of the time really do get on.

@craignewmark #JonathanSwift was at his absolute best on the subject of #BearingFalseWitness. A rare purely radical outing from him, with no underlying satire and no appeal to a reactionary or imagined past ideal. https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Works_of_the_Rev._Jonathan_Swift/Volume_10/On_bearing_false_Witness.
The timing also represents a rare instance of him getting ahead of the debate.
Finally, it shows up the appalling hypocrisy of so many self-proclaimed Christians (especially of the evangelical persuasion).

Useless Quote for 22 Jan:
"There is no vice which mankind carries to such wild extremes as that of avarice …"
~ Jonathan Swift, in The Examiner, No. 28 (Feb. 1710)
So I finally finished work on “Commanded by an angel from heaven,” an essay considering the difference between doctrine and practice as discussed by #JonathanSwift in his sermons, with a detour into #EivindBerggrav because, well, why not if one can? It should be appearing later this year or early next. I think there is a lot we still need to understand about practice in the C18 #ChurchofIreland quite apart from doctrine.

Last year, I considered the fascinating (to me, at least) question of why Frances Talbot, Countess of Tyrconnell, #TheJocobiteDuchess, is buried in a resplendent tomb in #StPatrick'sCathedral, Dublin, and why #JonathanSwift, who should, in theory, have had good reason to prevent this (not least personal animosity against her sister and brother-in-law) likely welcomed it, even if discretion required him to hold his tongue. Here's the resulting paper: https://bit.ly/3IMx0ZA.

#introduction Hello. I am moving from one of the big instances. Currently, I am working on a biography of Nancy Sharp, a C20 English painter, but I am generally still most active writing about #JonathanSwift (one recent talk and an essay forthcoming) and the #ChurchofIreland (not always related to Swift). I also write on occasion about #EssexCricket or #CountyCricket in general. Probably not doing any more translation, but spending more time reading in Norwegian just for the fun of it.

When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him.

Introduction: I have written about and am still interested in #MaryToft #JonathanSwift #AlexanderPope #DanielDefoe #WilliamByrdII #IndenturedServitude #Slavery. I recently finished a book ms. on William Byrd and slavery in early Virginia that will come out in June. Taught over thirty years at Georgetown University but now retired and living in #Berkeley, where I am raising an extraordinarily traumatized but lovable dog.
