23 December 1953, Lavrentiy Beria was killed in a scramble for power following Stalin's death, the fight won by Khrushchev.

Beria would not be missed: as the NKVD head, he was responsible for countless crimes, including the murder of Polish officers in the #KatynMassacre.

"Fled to Manchuria" was Stalin's answer for Generals Sikorski and Anders, enquiring in December 1941 about the whereabouts of Polish officers the Soviets had taken prisoner in 1939.
