After the storm. Masts and sails
Gone, everything above deck
Disappeared by the typhoon,
The sides shattered, the corpse
Of the vessel overturned and
Floating between the huge
Ups and downs of the restless
Swell, those interminable seas.
Only the keel remains intact
A dorsal fin hiding in the
Dark troughs and valleys
Waiting for its particular
Prey. The sky touches the
Water, and it explodes
In renewed fury.

Songbird's uncommon keel shape. It's much more swept aft than most keels I've seen on other boats, including other Bavarias. It looks a lot like the dorsal fin of a dolphin. I quite like it 🐬

The bottom of the keel extend below the saildrive and propeller, doing a great job protecting both from any lines or other floating debris. Perhaps this is why we've never caught anything worse than a plastic bag, even when under sail where the rope cutter wouldn't work.
