Is It already? Wild roan stallion Loki and his pinto buddy Lucas on Utah's west desert. Sometimes horses yawn just because they are drowsy or just waking up, like you or me. But more often it is a sign of stress or even dominance.

Opponents of wild horses say they are not native, but science proves them wrong. Paleontology and genetic analyses prove the modern-day horse originated in North America some 2-300,000 years ago. They went extinct but were "reintroduced" by the Spaniards around 1500.

Happy to spot this guy near the waterhole in October. In 2011 he was in an epic battle with a massive gray stallion known as Goliath. In that battle Goliath took his left ear! The battle lasted across two days, but finally Butterscotch retreated to heal. He is now known as One Ear!

Two young bachelor stallions run across the hill side behind the water hole. These two are buddies, but part of a group of four who are constantly skirmishing for dominance and control of a band. They go from hanging out and playing to all out fighting.

Ladies of the Desert. Eleanor and Arrowhead are two of the older girls on the west desert, and best friends who are never far apart. Eleanor, in front, is estimated to be in her early twenties and Arrowhead just a few years younger. The stallions are flashy, but the mares run the show.

This stallion in the north Onaqui herd doesn't have a recorded local name. He is simply OQ190sS. He leads a small band of 4 mares and one young stallion. He is a big, smart, easy-going stallion that no one seemed to want to mess with. I called him Elgin, which comes from Gaelic meaning high-minded.

Wild Horse Wednesday! A young, 2 yr old stallion, Bolt, learns a valuable lesson about curiosity. He ventured too close to the band of older stallion, Valentino, and is summarily sent running. He is getting too old now to be considered innocent.
