Unrequested Movie Opinions, Pt. 001: Last night I reckoned that it was time to give Ken Russell's 1980 SF excursion ALTERED STATES a proper view (I saw it on a crappy B&W TV set in the 1980s and forgot 95% of the details). Yeah, it's got narrative quirks and Annoying Character problems, but it was far more reined-in and focused than I remembered. Revelation time: I had no idea that the late, great Jordan Cronenweth shot the film (two years prior to his work on BLADE RUNNER), and his stylistic flourishes are in full force. Along with The Miners' Picnic it shows compassion reminiscent of Ken Loach. Here Shelagh talks of the high-rise flats being built without any amenities such as theatres, destroying communities.

@hp_bookcraft That's an old Omnibus (a long-running BBC arts programme of the 60s and 70s which also helped launch the great #KenRussell) one-off from the late 1960s ("Schalken The Painter" from, I think, 1979 was also Omnibus). I suspect it helped to kick start the series proper, though. "A Warning To The Curious" remains my favourite. It's the quiet I find most eerie. Works best late at night, lights out, with a glass of whiskey or similar. A solitary pleasure.
