<<Is the Milky Way’s rotation curve declining?>>

<<A bigger question whether the Milky Way’s rotation curve is declining in a Keplerian fashion. This would indicate that the total mass has been enclosed>> *if and only if* the enclosed mass has a spherical distribution.

Otherwise a good analysis.

@paulmasson . I'm not 100% clear what happens with the outside of a two body problem though. Iin particular, not modeling the Earth as a simple point mass, but having some extent. Central inverse square...with N centers?

But my problem can be point-mass during some parts and during those parts I have another perturbation that I'm trying to tease out. Think something like solar radiation pressure, although it isn't based like that.

Shortly after Johannes Kepler received the three laws of planetary motion on Mt. Sinai, he dropped one and spent the rest of his life working to rediscover it.

A researcher at Indiana University, who just received a degree in music composition and chemistry, has turned the light spectra of chemical elements into sound, creating a "musical periodic table."

I feel like Pythagoras and Kepler would be pleased...🪐 🎶

The analysis of the bound was work led by my brilliant PhD student, David Specht. We were also aided by great work from colleagues Radek Poleski (Warsaw) and Matthew Penny (Lousiana State).

The and, potentially, missions will allow us to much more reliably the fraction of potentially mass . Exciting times!

Thanks for reading. If you've enjoyed this thread, why not boost it to others.

@nbatalha @ec_euclid I'm hoping so. But there are no guarantees yet since has to deliver on the first and foremost. But I love the fact that one of 's last acts (a mission that you were so deeply involved with of course!) was to find a . I feel like it's passing the baton on to to extend .

So, even with the first detection from space of an exoplanet using microlensing, we are challenging the boundaries of planet formation. and may detect thousand of planets. They will complete the started by . They will help us to better understand whether of our is common or unusual. (9/n)

The last candidate we found was not an . Instead it was a bound . In fact it is the most distant planet yet found by and is twice as far away as the next most distant. It's the first bound planet to be discovered from using . Remarkably it's of the closest analogues to Jupiter yet found, though it orbits a 60% the mass of the . Theory suggests it is almost too small to host a Jupiter. arxiv.org/abs/2203.16959 (8/n)

Our intention was to use the mini-survey to find (). FFPs are that are alone in deep space. Remarkably, there was already some tentative evidence for such planets. Perhaps they formed like out of gas by themselves, or perhaps they were ejected from their system. We need data to get the answers. Indeed our work uncovered 5 new candidates, 4 of which are consistent with mass FFPs. doi.org/10.1093/mnras/stab1377 (7/n)

We recently tested out the idea of doing from using the . Kepler has so far found thousands of but using the , not microlensing. But in 2016, before it stopped working, it did a mini microlensing survey. Kepler wasn't designed to do microlensing and colleagues spent years developing a pipeline that would work. Then, my Iain McDonald and I built a sophisticated pipeline to find candidates (6/n)
