Here are four of at least *ten* kererū I saw on my weekly biodiversity run this weekend, through the southwestern suburbs of Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ. All were seen in the Cashmere hills. Usually I'm lucky if I see one or two.
I tip my hat with gratitude to all the predator control work and forest restoration being done on the Port Hills by the Christchurch City Council and the Summit Road Society.

Here's all the kererū I saw in 2022 along my standard run routes through Ōtautahi-Christchurch. Kererū are large fruit & leaf eating forest pigeons. They're most common in native bush of the Port Hills, plus enjoy the fruit of all the wild poroporo that's grown up after the fires. They venture into the suburbs at the base of the hills, especially when garden plums are fruiting. Also, some now breed in the Botanic Gardens!

Spent some time watching a Kererū in the rain across the road from my house this morning. The lamp posts in my neighbourhood are popular perches for them, although this one didn't seem too stoked when a blackbird joined it!

We got a visitor this past weekend! I felt so lucky to be able to take these photos of a Kererū (New Zealand wood pigeon) pretty up close. They fly around the house quite often, and they are big! These pics slightly underdone because my ISO choice didn't quite work in the fading light and rain (hard to see but was raining steadily in these pics) but I'm getting better at predicting their movements at least :)
