#MayThe4thBeWithYou When I was 4 years old, I grabbed a hammer and a screwdriver (used as a chisel) from my dad's tools, and carved this AT-AT from memory on a piece of wood. I think that was the moment it was obvious I was going to be in the arts #Starwars #kidart

Discovered that you can buy lids for kiddo's favourite yogurt so we're making some art.
Sprinkle & sugar transition complete:
Also my 5 year old can pipe icing now, as long as you don't mind some icing coming out the top of the piping bag and going right into his belly. π
Kiddo's piping technique is making for some fun cupcake decor. π
Today's kid experiment was a hideous mix of water, vinegar, salt, sugar and
food colouring. When he was done taste testing it (only the dog thought it was worth a second sip), examining vials under different lighting conditions, and recording his observations about how the dye moved around, I gave him some mini yarn skeins to try in it.
Here they are a few hours later! The purpler/pinker one is non-superwash, the bluer one is superwash. Pretty impressive how different they look despite being in the same dye bath! ππ

Snow dyeing experiment #2! I actually washed these out today but they weren't dry before I ran out of good light, so here's some intermediate step photos.
The last one is a couple of skeins in the leftover water from the pans below (with extra citric acid added). I'll decant that one tomorrow.
Kiddo saved the rest of the melted snow-dye in a big apple juice bottle and used it for some other non yarn experiments today with baking soda and a paint brush and soap among other stuff. π§βπ¬
#Fiberuary folk -- I'll try to have some mending tomorrow, but this was definitely a time limited opportunity. βοΈβοΈβοΈ

And the final yarns from the first snow dye! βοΈ
The darker two in the lower left are the ones that were inside the snowballs: the dark patches come from being immersed in the puddle after the melt.
The next four were in the other pan and their puddle wasn't as dark. The two in the upper right are non-superwash and the colours mixed and softened on them to be more peachy and pastel.
The two in the lower right are superwash and got a mix of intense saturated colour and some more gentle de-saturated colours depending on the snow melt. They're also a lot more messy looking because my kid shook them a little extra vigorously while getting the water out. πͺοΈ
All of these used 10g minis from knit picks in various bases. (They're my favourite for kid art because I'm not stuck detangling a full skein, plus they go on sale for a dollar.)
I'm pretty pleased with how these turned out!

Dye intermediate step: after the melt!
I could have heated these in the trays but I wanted to preserve the uncolored parts and there's a lot of dye left, so I pulled them out and put them in the microwave to heat set instead.

Snow dyeing experiment! βοΈ
There are some yarn minis under all that. We'll see what we get!

Kid has decided that Valentine's Day is a perfect excuse to hide and find sticky notes all over the house.
(It's much harder when he hides some in the freezer.)
My kid hid yarn all over my office like a squirrel. He "helpfully" took the labels off some of them because they were "old" and "not pretty."
He did this all in 15 minutes while I was trying to finish code review for my open source contributors before lunch. So if my review for you seemed a little distracted today, blame the yarn.

The Dread Pirate kid wanted to make a car sandwich and has been planning this on and off for a few days. He's got a pretty interesting wheel assembly so they could turn the way he wanted and I love that he made double headlights with cheese light beams.
We didn't have a plate that was big enough and had to get a cutting board for the light beams.π¨ π π¨
Time for #ThrowbackThursday with this crafty elementary school project. Apparently squiggly flowers and Arctic animals have been my thing for a long time.
Iβll be teaching a few elementary school art classes soon and would love more ideas. What are some of your favorite elementary school art projects?

The eleven year old 's drag queens are getting ready for the festive season.
#ThrowbackThursday
When I was in 2nd grade, I was taking an assessment and was allowed to draw after I finished. This Dragon was the result.
If you look in the upper left, youβll see a star and an βA+β. Apparently I was feeling confident that day.
If only we could all hold onto the self-hype inner-dialogue of a child in their groove. How kind is your inner dialogue today?

Yesterday in kid art: turns out adding makeup shimmer powders to kid stained glass paint is pretty great for adding sparkle. Even the dog agrees!

My ten yr old drew this picture of her 20 yr old sister. #RainbowArt #Kidart #Drawing

Yesterday's yarns! The ones my kid dyed are on the right, and they absolutely look like the yarns he wanted to buy the last time we went into a yarn shop, particularly the red/rainbow-y one. Kiddo loves the vibrant variegated stuff. (And soft!)
Not sure how they're going to look for @knitting but kid is gonna have some fun mitts ... Once I actually untangle these.
Look, it may look like some of those mini skeins are really tangled, but you have to understand that my kid needed to build a replica of the islands from Bowser's Fury in the sink and sometimes a mess must be made in the name of art.
