(Yiddish: קלעזמער or כּלי־זמר) is an instrumental musical tradition of the Ashkenazi of Central and Eastern Europe. The essential elements of the tradition include dance tunes, ritual melodies, and virtuosic improvisations played for listening; played at weddings and other social functions. The musical genre incorporated elements of many other musical genres including Ottoman music, Baroque , German and Slavic folk dances, and religious Jewish music

Something I meant to add to my thread. Joachim Stutschewsky actually incorporated a longform Pedutser composition into his Klezmer's Wedding Music piece. It's about 8:45 into the whole suite, you can listen to it here: youtu.be/3fnjQReYh24?t=528

The piano accompaniment and cello counter-lines are Stutschewsky's addition but the violin part is pretty faithful to what appears in the manuscripts which claim to be Pedotser's work, down to the techniques (harmonics, etc.)

I'm not sure what I will do with this body of compositions. Maybe help usher it into book form eventually.

Once again, this whole project came out of an interesting crowdsourced klezmer digitization effort called the Kiselgof-Makonovetsky Digital Manuscript Project. These Pedutser pieces were a small subset of a much larger collection of klezmer and cosmopolitan music being worked on by volunteers in that project.

Most of the pieces are quite long by klezmer standards - a few pages long. Some are short dances. To be honest, having spent months going through them, I'm still not sure how close they are to his improvised performances of the 19th century. He never wrote them down himself, so 100% of the scores and recordings are secondhand (apprentices or contemporaries) or thirdhand as they eventually made their way into the repertoire.

Around 6 Pedotser pieces have been published (one in a Joachim Stutschewsky book published in Israel and the rest in Moisei Beregovksy ethnographic works on klezmer from the USSR).

On the other hand most of the ones in the Vernadsky's manuscripts have never been published. But I'm not surprised, they are interesting, but not at all accessible, either for listening or playing. Some of them have passages that feel like klezmer followed by long technical exercises.

The image in the previous post is just one of them, it comes from the notebooks of another violinist A.Y. Makonovetsky decades later. I found it, and the majority of the scores, in manuscripts digitized from the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine for the Klezmer Institute's digitization project KMDMP: klezmerinstitute.org/kmdmp/
Other sources are recordings, and other stray manuscripts from other sources. Others still I've read about but cannot find the pieces.

A project I've been working on in 2022 is collecting music from a 19th century klezmer violinist from Berdychiv called A.M. Kholodenko (1828-1902), commonly known as Pedutser.

He was a celebrity Jewish violinist in the Russian empire who led a large klezmer orchestra for decades. He was known for introducing advanced violin techniques and developing simple Jewish melodies into extended variations. So far I've identified about 60 pieces by him.

a former fortress (in the picture) that became a place for arts and culture, of all things. where likeminded people gather in a welcoming spirit. i think "thriving" is my favourite word.

Of course, because it's a topic that mainly interests American Boomers, most deep discussion is still happening on Facebook and was not really as present on Twitter anyways😆so it may not carry over to here quite as much
