The term has been used as a catch-all for anything breaking gender norms.

Cadi derives from the girls name Catrin and was often used as a pejorative towards Queer people. A similar given name-based term in English is Nancy.

Male maypole dancers dressed in women's clothes were sometimes called Cadi, hence why today it has been on my mind!

Celebrating - a day against bullying and homophobia. Today you're encouraged to wear pink in defiance of anti LGBTQ+ bigotry.
Did you know that in the 90s, Welsh gay and lesbian group CYLCH produced a Welsh-language magazine called Y Draig Binc?

Today is ! Celebrating Jan Morris (1926-2020)- a Welsh trans woman whose 1974 memoir Conundrum was instrumental to the visibility of trans people and our transitions in the 20th Century.

There is one other source for the  term asexual in Welsh. The medical journal from 1986 is the earliest known usage of ‘anrhywiol’ as a human sexuality term in Welsh, but it also appears 6 years later in the 1992 edition of the Hippocrene Standard Dictionary – Welsh-English English-Welsh by H. Meurig Evans.

Since then it has seen a steady increase in usage and is being included in more and more Welsh language LGBT+ media.

Anrywiol ordinarily means asexual, but it is possible that in 2006-2008, attempts were made to move away from older archaic or offensive terminology to a new term. It's possible anrywiol was one of those attempts, but rhyngryw, whenever it originated originally, won out in the end.

In 2016 the introduction of -rhywedd (gender) instead of-ryw (sex) is printed in Geiriadur Cymraeg Gomer as Trawsryweddol (Transgender) alongside Trawsrywiol. Since then, the two terms are often printed together in dictionaries.

@llyfraublaidd As you'll see from the latest email I sent you, I was unable to find any LGBTQ+ entries in a 1993 Learners Dictionary - I hope you've found that more recent ones are a little more inclusive. (and if they're not, they jolly well should be!)

Usage picks up again in the 90s and in 1995 Geiriadur yr Academi includes several pieces of bisexual terminology (Deuryw, Deurywiol, Deurywiog) bisexual, (Deurywiad/Deurywiaid) a bisexual/bisexuals, (Deurywioldeb) bisexuality, and (yn ddeurywiol) in bisexual(ity).

Deurywiol is used in dictionaries to this day, though like with many pieces of LGBT+ terminology, inclusion is often infrequent and spread out.

GaySocs in Wales were known as Cymdeithasau Hoyw according to students in Wales in the 80s, however, I have not found any instances of this in print. Despite this, the next times it would appear in a Welsh dictionary are in 1993, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2016 and 2017.

Have you got a Welsh dictionary? Have a see if yours has Hoyw in it! Comment below if it does!

We have here a sort of archaeological record of Welsh LGBT+ terms throughout the last Century. As far as current knowledge goes, lesbian terminology history in Welsh dates back to 1973 at least. That's 50 years ago this year!

I hope you enjoyed this first instalment of Welsh LGBT words of the day history! Share this or save if you liked it and be sure to follow for the rest in the series.

P'nawn da to the new folk!

As I just tweeted, I have a new site for my personal blogs in the works. It isn't quite finished yet, but when it is, this instance will be where I'll be promoting it! Hoping to make this my more primary means of posting about my books.

Archived my twitter posts dating back to a year this morning. Hopefully I can preserve them in a blog for posterity- keep an eye out for that when it drops.

In other news- still figuring out this platform- struggling with the discoverability element. That being said, I'm going to keep trying here!

[From my Instagram]

No informational post today- rather, I'm putting out a tentative call for any Patagonian Welsh speakers who would be willing to talk to me about LGBTQ+ language in Y Wladfa (if any). If you know of anyone who would be interested, please send them my way!
If it helps, I'm conversational in Spanish.

Diolch! Gracias!

Today marks Intersex day of Remembrance. It is a day first observed in 2005 to commemorate the birthday of 1800s French intersex memoir writer Herculine Barbin. The term for intersex in Welsh is Rhyngryw.
