As @AltonDooley correctly points out, many mastodon #fossils from western North America were recently added to a new species: the Pacific mastodon, Mammut pacificus. This includes the #fossils from the #LaBreaTarPits that I mistakenly referred to as American mastodons, and as a born-and-raised West Coaster I'm ashamed of myself. To atone, I'm celebrating mastodon diversity with these Pacific mastodons from #RanchoLaBrea, the #WesternScienceCenter, and the #NaturalHistoryMuseumofLACounty!

Hello Mastodon!
