"In 2011, approximately 26.7 million tons of pollutants were emitted by gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment, accounting for 24%−45% of all nonroad gasoline emissions. Gasoline-powered landscape maintenance equipment (leaf blowers/vacuums, and trimmers, edgers, brush cutters) accounted for 43% of VOCs and around 50% of fine PM. Two-stroke engines were responsible for the vast majority of fine PM."

@ash I did this a while ago when I had a backyard. I let the grass grow long in most areas of the backyard. Unfortunately, in the front my neighbour was less than agreeable to let it grow beyond effectively a buzzcut...

But I will say, in the backyard, I did notice more bugs and insects in and around the general unmowed area. I'm not sure if it helped or hindered anything, but, it was nice. #gardening #NaturalLawns #landscaping

@Fawn I’m looking for a kid-friendly ground cover native to the mid-Atlantic area, near DC.

We have Lots of deciduous trees, grey squirrels, birds and foxes. It’d be nice to attract more birds and butterflies. Bees and spiders not so much.

I’m pursuing solar and geothermal, so want to avoid trees big enough to shade the roof or push roots into wells.

Wet heavy snow last night here in Flagstaff. I went out and cleared off the bent down branches of our small cherry and plum trees this morning. Minutes later our oak tree lost a huge branch which crushed/decapitated the little plum tree. 😥

It still has a couple side branches so we'll see this spring/summer if it needs to be replaced or if we just wait and see how it grows...
