Amused by discussion of English needing a plural second-person pronoun.
YOU started out plural, y'know. THEE/THOU were second-person singular. Then . . . change happened. Now, YOU is both singular and plural second person. Context tells us which. Like it has throughout the last few centuries, when the change took place.
It amuses the hell outta me, honest.
"Internecine" is today's Word-A-Day calendar word. The etymology has a surprising twist.
"Internecine comes from the Latin internecinus ("fought to the death" or "destructive")."
So far so good. But the interesting bit is how it got to mean *mutual* destruction, or internal group conflict...

Also interested in #sociolinguistics and the relationship between language and society. #StandardLanguageIdeology and #prescriptivism are central topics in our #Graduiertenkolleg on #normativity at #FUBerlin.
