"When you’ve got a government that talks about things like ‘an invasion’ in relation to immigration; you have a perfect storm."

“We could change the rhetoric around asylum so that we no longer have a home secretary that tries to blame the government’s failings on some of the most vulnerable people in our country.”

Lisa Nandy,
Labour MP,

"The language that our politicians use matters – language which dehumanises, language which incites, language that enables those bad actors of the far right to march from the margins and threaten the common good.”

“The political arithmetic of our leaders needs to multiply hope, enabling cohesion, rather than dividing communities through enabling hatred."

Arun Arora,
Bishop of Kirkstall.

This thread has been quoting from Joan Salter, the Holocaust survivor who challenged the U.K. Home Secretary Suella Braverman on her discriminatory use of language when describing immigrants and refugees.
You can read the full devastating response in the article below.

We've all seen the clip of Braverman defending her choice of language when describing immigrants as an 'invasion' -to a Holocaust survivor.

Here is the response, from the Holocaust survivor herself, Joan Salter. It's far more interesting and relevant than anything that Braverman has to say.

ummm, I watched the question, and the reply from the Home Secretary. Where was the misrepresentation exactly?

RT @ukhomeoffice@twitter.com

A statement:

The Home Secretary attended an event last night and took questions, including on immigration policy.

Footage of a conversation with a holocaust survivor is circulating online. The video has been heavily edited and doesn’t reflect the full exchange.

It’s time to change our language & our practice. Stop othering. Stop gatekeeping. Stop fitting people in. Focus instead on welcoming. Connecting. Including. Anchoring.

Belonging.

A new blog for a new year.

A fun challenge for those in - stop using the term patient.

I recently stopped using the word patient in medical documentation & conversation. Instead I use the person’s name. I’ve been suprised by the ways my attitude shifted as a result. There is something othering that occurs from using language that upholds the “patient vs provider” hierarchy & disconnect.
