"Far-right outsider takes shock lead in Argentinian primary elections - Javier Milei, an admirer of Donald Trump, thinks the climate crisis is a lie and wants sale of human organs to be legalised
"The far-right populist Javier Milei rocked Argentina’s political establishment on Sunday by emerging as the leader in primary elections to choose presidential candidates for the October general election.
Milei, an admirer of the former US president Donald Trump, says Argentina’s central bank should be abolished, thinks the climate crisis is a lie, characterises sex education as a ploy to destroy the family, believes the sale of human organs should be legal and wants to make it easier to own handguns.
Votes were still being counted late on Sunday but analysts agreed that the upstart candidate, who gained notoriety – and a rockstar-like following – by angrily ranting against the “political caste”, did much better than expected and is a real contender for the presidency.
With about 92% of polling locations reporting, Milei had about 30% of the total vote, according to official results. The candidates in the main opposition coalition, United for Change, were at 28% and the current governing coalition, Union for the Homeland, had 27%."

" #Winter #heatwave in #Andes is sign of things to come, scientists warn - Human-caused climate disruption and El Niño push temperature in mountains to 37C.
Exceptional winter heat in the Andean mountains of South America has surged to 37C, prompting local scientists to warn the worst may be yet to come as human-caused climate disruption and El Niño cause havoc across the region.
The heatwave in the central Chilean Andes is melting the snow below 3,000 metres (9,840ft), which will have knock-on effects for people living in downstream valleys who depend on meltwater during the spring and summer.
Tuesday was probably the warmest winter day in northern Chile in 72 years, according to Raul Cordero, a climate scientist at the University of Groningen, who said the 37C recorded at the Vicuña Los Pimientos station in the Coquimbo region was caused by a combination of global heating, El Niño and easterly gusts, known by locals as Terral winds that bring hot, dry weather.
Dozens of meteorological monitoring stations at more than 1,000 metres altitude recorded temperatures above 35C in winter, according to the Extreme Temperatures Around The World blog."

Sometimes, oftentimes, we so-called "alarmists" are spot on - "Drought leaves millions in #Uruguay without tap water fit for drinking - After years of underinvestment, reservoir has had to be topped up from estuary, raising health concerns - More than half of Uruguay’s 3.5 million citizens are without access to tap #water fit for drinking, and experts say the situation could continue for months.
Some had predicted the crisis years ago when pointing out the vulnerability of the single reservoir supplying water to the metropolitan area around the capital, #Montevideo.
By Latin American standards, Uruguay is a high-income country and it has historically thought of itself as having abundant water resources. Those who warned of diminishing supplies were considered catastrophists and investment was postponed.
Three consecutive years of #drought have almost emptied the reservoir of fresh water, and to avoid shortages the state-run water supplier, OSE, has since the beginning of the year been gradually adding brackish water from the Rio de la Plata estuary.
By early May the mix had reached the maximum levels of sodium and chlorides recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), and now it has double those levels, giving the water a repulsive taste and raising questions about potential effects on health.
Authorities maintain that the chemicals only affect the taste and smell of the water and do not necessarily pose a risk to most people’s health.
Some vulnerable groups such as babies, pregnant women and people with health conditions have been warned against drinking the water but there have been conflicting claims about its safety for the broader population."

‘It’s pillage’: thirsty Uruguayans decry Google’s plan to exploit water supply - Country suffering its worst #drought in 74 years, with government even mixing saltwater into drinking supply.
A plan to build a Google data centre that will use millions of litres of water a day has sparked anger in #Uruguay, which is suffering its worst drought in 74 years.
Water shortages are so severe in the country that a state of emergency has been declared in #Montevideo and the authorities have added salty water to the public drinking water supplies, prompting widespread protests.
Critics claim that the government is prioritising water for transnationals and agribusiness at the expense of its own citizens. Daniel Pena, a researcher at the University of the Republic in Montevideo, said: “Only a tiny proportion of water in Uruguay is used for human consumption. The majority is used for big agro industries, such as soya, rice and wood pulping. Now we have #Google planning to use enormous quantities of water.”

"Jimmy Carter tried like no president ever had to put human rights at the center of American foreign policy. It was a turnabout dictators and dissidents alike found hard to believe..
"But when they broadcast Carter’s reelection loss to Ronald Reagan in November 1980, Duvalier’s dreaded enforcers, the TonTon Macoutes, fired weapons and shouted, 'Human rights are over, the cowboys are back in the White House!'"

Hello everyone in the Fediverse!
This is our #introduction.
We are business in #Singapore dedicated to promote South American culture.
We do that mostly through our #foods and #beverages, for which we have even setup a supply chain of key #ingredients since 2015, but we would participate of any cultural expression such as music, dance, poetry, narrative, painting, cinema, theater, etc.
We also love to experiment with collaborations by chefs and artists from both sides of the Pacific.
We are strong believers in freedom, integration, open access, inclusiveness and collaboration as the key ingredients of social progress, so we hope to make of the Fediverse our social media home. 😊
