Their close relationship to #bubbles suggests they were formed by bubble migration and transfer in a heterogeneous #magma at the shallow conduit (or perhaps the #lava fountain), after a turbulent ascent through the crust.
This was likely preceded by basanite #mixing with a amphibole-bearing tephritic reservoir. #Thermobarometry suggests that the tephrite was stored at sub-Moho dephts before mixing.

I work at the Osservatorio Etneo, Catania section of the Italian National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology #INGV.
