Some years ago, we visited the Mauna Loa volcano and toured the area between the summit and sea. We saw areas that used to be neighborhoods that are now fields of black, craggy lava. It is hard to get a mental picture of the unstoppable power of molten rock flowing downhill. I recommend seeing it for yourself sometime.
