A trick in increasing quickly your ability in understanding German.
1) Take most commen Prefixes: Ab-, An-, Auf-, Be-, Ent-, Er-, Für-, Ge-, Vor-, Ver-, Um-
2) Choose a simple Verb. Here I choose: geben - to give
3) Make a complete list (X means don't exist in common usage), like:
- abgeben - to hand in
- angeben - indicate/specify or boast about
- aufgeben - to give up or seldom to hand in
- begeben - X
- entgeben - X
- ergeben - result in, to surrender or seldom abondon oneself to s.th.
- fürgeben - X
- gegeben - given in the sense of preexisting/predefined
- vorgeben - pretend
- vergeben - forgive or to assign to or similar to predefined
- umgeben - to surround
4) depending on your skills you chose the most important to you, e.g.:
- abgeben - to hand in
- angeben - indicate/specify
- aufgeben - to give up
- ergeben - result in, to surrender
- gegeben - given in the sense of preexisting/predefined
- vorgeben - pretend
- vergeben - forgive
- umgeben - to surround
5) Learn these at once to prevent mixing them up.
- It's easy because the words are not difficult to learn if you know already 'geben'.
- you learn several important words at once
- it helps to remind not all these words have s.th. to do with to give at all like 'vorgeben' in the sense of pretend.
- ge- is also the prefix of past tense like: da hat es Brot gegeben. This is not meant here.
* I'm not a Neuroexpert or Teacher, to know if this is good fore sustainable learning.

Just listened to a great episode about dealing with your inner critic and learned a few German words in the process.
Listen to this episode with my podcast player I'm building for language learners:

Someone was asking if 'vergossen' is the past tense of 'vergessen' 🤭 so cute.
No, it's another word:
vergießen - vergossen (to spill over)
vergessen - vergaß (to forget)
Watching the Buffy episode "Band Candy" in German. I now know how to say "Er hat meine Schokolade geklauft" (he stole my chocolate) which I'm quite certain will come in handy some day.😏

I walked so far this morning to get a coffee that it was far from hot by the time I got back to the apartment. I shrugged and told myself, "Aber egal, ich habe Kaffee" ("but whatever, I have coffee") and am absolutely chuffed to bits that I managed a whole sentence in German without having to think about it.😊 ☕ 🇩🇪
