As someone who grew up in urban San Francisco and is new to small town residential neighborhoods, I find it odd how much neighbors have a sense of entitlement about what happens to front yards that don’t belong to them. There is a weird belief that “weedy” things from next door will destroy their well-being, and forget about an awareness of #LeaveTheLeaves, not mowing on purpose, or other “messy” concepts.

"For pollinators' sake, don't spring into garden cleanup too soon": Resist that urge to get outside and clean up the yard (depending on where you live).

Quite a gathering of Eurasian blackbirds (Turdus merula) in the back garden today, turning over fallen leaves to glean worms & insects. Counted 3 males & 4 females at one point.

Tips for suburban fall yard cleanup. 1. Do your own yard work with an electric blower or a rake. 2. Clear just enough lawn to reassure the neighbors that you're a tidy person. 3. Put the rest of the leaves where you would have put mulch. 4. If you still have leaves left over, mow over them (with electric mower). 5. Finish by mowing tidy edges around your leaf-mulch piles.

Aside from one instance of clearing the walkway, I have not raked at all this autumn. So, why isn't my yard just blanketed with leaves, particularly under that tree? Well, seems that over the last few days, the wind has done a heckuva job moving leaves en masse to that strip of mulched ground against the fence opposite the tree. #leavetheleaves
