A Naga is a divine semi-serpent of Indian origin, now spread all over Southeast Asia. Whether sacred ancestors of the Khmer people, guardians of the Buddha, or Shiva's companion and Garuda's nemesis, Naga are an important symbol of Indian belief. #LegendaryWednesday
Python was a massive serpent of Delphi, who guarded the center of the Earth: he was supposedly sent by Hera to chase Leda in jealousy, causing Apollo to slay the serpent to protect his mother and sister, thus becoming patron of Delphi. #LegendaryWednesday

#Celtic #LegendaryWednesday: For his hospitality, Morgan Preece had received from the fairies of Cader Idris a golden harp whose jewels glittered red and green in the glow of the open fire. A begrudging neighbor taunted Morgan about his clumsy fingers. So he forced him to dance.
As long as Morgan played, Evan Jones had to dance, whether he wanted to or not. His face was soon all red with anger. He insulted Morgan until he could no longer speak from exhaustion. Finally Evan's face turned pale and his feet gave way under him.
Only now did Morgan put his enchanted harp aside.
As he watched his now no longer mocking neighbor drag himself home on all fours, he heard a voice: `Fairy music was not meant to be played in spite`. At the same moment the golden harp disappeared.
Morgan Pierce never received another gift from the Fairies.

Among the talismans #Lugh demanded from Tuireann's three sons as punishment for the murder of his father #Cian were three apples (according to the tale, from the Hesperides Garden in the East of the World).
Lugh said: „Only these apples will satisfy me, as they are the best and most beautiful in the world. This is what they are made of: Their color is that of polished gold, and the head of a one-month-old child is no larger than any one of these apples. When you dine on them, they taste like honey, and bleeding wounds and the most malignant diseases disappear. The apples do not diminish when eaten, even if one eats from them for a long time and constantly. Whoever succeeds in taking one of these apples has accomplished his greatest feat, since he will never lose it again.“

Most people know the tale of Samson, the Hebrew strongman whose power was in his hair, but why his hair? He was a Nazirite, a person who took a holy vow before God. Other Nazirites vowed no wine or contact with death, or like Samson refused to cut their hair. Samson was a Nazirite from birth, as the angel commanded his Nazirite parents, thus giving the Hebrews a champion against the Philistines. #LegendaryWednesday
The Two-Mouthed Woman, the Futakuchi Onna, is a seemingly normal-looking woman who comes as a guest to a home in Japanese folklore, only for food to mysteriously disappear: when the host investigates to see if his quite-skinny guest is stealing food, he finds that she is, but for a hidden purpose: deep in her hair is a cursed second mouth, which must eat constantly! #legendarywednesday

The sea has many faces in Norse myth, from Njord the god of the sea, to the sea itself, Ægir, whose wife Ran hoards souls of the dead at sea and whose many daughters are the waves. The two coexist: Njord often parties at Ægir's abode, along with the other gods, as seen in myths like Lokasenna. #legendarywednesday

#Celtic #LegendaryWednesday: In ancient #Ireland „it was expected that a foster child be reared in accordance with the role they would fulfil in life as an adult. Foster parents were responsible for ensuring the child was taught the knowledge, business, or trade suited to their rank. If the quality of the fostering was found to be inadequate in any way, the foster parents would be subjected to a hefty fine of two thirds of the original foster-fee.
#Lugh was known as the Samildanach, or ‘Master of all Arts’, because Queen #Tailtiu had seen to it that her foster son was taught not just in the battle arts, but many other skills also, such as healing, playing the harp, composing poetry, working metals as a smith, to name but a few.“
