#JimmyHalperin has been one of the most beautiful tenor saxophonists since his maturation after the death of teacher #LennieTristano. His work #Psalm with (also teacher mentor pianist) #SalMosca should be spoken with in the reverential terms usually reserved for Bach. His work with the sympathetic #PålNybergTrio is exquisite. This is a cracking album.

@gthomson They had some spiritual thing going on. #LennieTristano was linked with #WilliamReich. The latter was stark staring mad and should’ve been incarcerated in my opinion. #Tristano did’t play like he did because of #orgones. The late Ind suggests getting on board. My view: get taught by Lennie: then let go = #LeeKonitz.

We hear very little about #TeddyWilson who easily crossed that big band to small group divide that survived into the bebop era. Influential pianist (#LennieTristano and #BudPowell clearly listened). Often the pillar behind #Pres #LesterYoung & #BillieHoliday. Superb in his own right. (I used to play 🎷 with a very gifted pianist in Portsmouth, Lots John Russell. Sounded a lot like Teddy. We’d duet. But unreliable due to alcohol. Died too young of related complications.

2 false starts. Then beginning of #LennieTristano’s serpentine ‘Wow’. I’m left handed and have an injury to my right hand (50% loss of feeling in right pinkie and ringer). So my style is very unorthodox and I’m useless in front of the camera! #Jazz #Rolandpiano. NB. Using right hand to stabilise keyboard!!

People mistook this for an insult. Motian had this remarkable open, almost slack time. It was quite deliberate and Lennie was kidding though Lennie played RIGHT ON the beat. That in turn bugged #KeithJarrett a little. #jazz #drums

We have to distinguish between commercialising one’s output (Moody’s Mood, Getz’s Jazz Samba?) & developing the #jazz form. #MilesDavis never compromised a note despite the foray into #fusion & #jazzrock. #ManfredSchoof, once l’enfant terrible with #SteveLacy & #MalWaldron turned to pop! In many ways this is about jazz’s cultural stock! The 70s were difficult for people like #LeeKonitz & #LennieTristano, #CharlieMingus. #Pioneers. Jazz missed a beat in the #1970s.

I’d like to have written an esteemed #jazz book. Generally jazz writing is poor, lazy. Can’t think of anything good in the general works since #IraGitler. I remember buying them all during the 1980s. Even #LeeKonitz could barely get a mention let alone #LennieTristano and #WarneMarsh. I’d flick through the index first. And yet all 3 are historically significant. Interesting that an appreciation of #Tristano et al’s music underwent a total renaissance during the 1990+s by players & writers.

#WillieDennis #trombone Worked and recorded with BOTH #LennieTristano AND #CharlieMingus groups. That’s like getting Doctorates at Oxford and Cambridge, Harvard and Yale. Underexposed rather than underrated. Let’s just say he could play. #jazz #embouchure Remarkable technique.

#WarneMarsh looking rather imperious. Quite an intimidating presence. Known as much for his seminal work with #LeeKonitz. Warne was the most devoted disciple of #LennieTristano’s teachings. Few of his students, no matter how advanced, were willing to commit so completely to LT’s ultimately restricted but highly developed conception of #improvisation. Warne, with the possible exception of #SalMosca, represents the logical terminus of LT’s #jazz #pedagogy

@JL32 FTW. In the 1940/50s some really good musicians comprising the orchestras of the great transatlantic liners (nicknamed #Geraldo’s Navy) would take lessons with the legendary Manhattan based pianist #LennieTristano. So #PeterInd (bass) and #RonnieBall (piano) would study at 317 E 32nd St during the 3-4 week turnaround. Alan Broadbent too studied with Tristano (photo) but a generation later I think. Also he didn’t fully absorb Tristano’s rather stringent requirements.
