There's a lot of Get Back that directly nods - and replies - to Let It Be. But missing what its responding to is a problem. If Let It Be falls deeper into obscurity, we're losing the answer to a lot of "why" questions about the way the Beatles were considered for a long time.

So that's my Let It Be rant. I could go on. But I'll save it for another day.

None of this is to say I don't like Get Back or think we didn't need it. I love it in every possible way. It sets the story straight(er) as a much more sincere & accurate look at the sessions. Having 8 hours vs. 80 minutes helps. But mostly, it tells a better story. We needed it.

BUT. Much like Get Back has rewritten the Beatles' history, Let It Be wrote it the first time. That matters. The response to it affected actual events & opinions for a really long time.

As I wrote here about the film's chronology, since Let It Be was last officially available (on VHS & Laserdisc), you could have bought A Hard Day's Night on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-Ray *and* streamed it online. And 4K/UHD if that counts as a different thing than Blu-Ray

But Let It Be, with its timing after the breakup, reflected all the negatives. Every book, documentary & the individual Beatles themselves referred to that period - January 1969 - as the problem, the end. Then they had the coda of Abbey Road, to go out on a high, and that was it.

Let It Be has been allowed to die. Apple promised a rerelease at the announcement of Get Back, but a "will" became an "if" at some point.

But the important part of this What If is changing what Let It Be forced upon us, including the four Beatles, in reality. The movie resulted in such an outsized reaction to events: the Paul/George argument, Paul yawning, Ringo exhausted, John disengaged. This defined Jan 1969.

They would still have put out solo LPs, still break up. Nothing else around it different, *only* they just didn't put the film & LP in spring '70. Maybe in '73, instead of the Blue/Red we get the "lost Beatles album" and the film. We can go in lots of directions from there.

Gonna *get back* to the Let It Be film for a little bit. Let's see where this lands. I love to play the butterfly effect/What If game. So what if the sessions happened exactly they did, but after all the delays, they just shelved the film entirely? So no Let It Be film/LP in 1970.

These are joyless performances for songs - at least the first 2 - that did seem joyful in rehearsal. I counted 1 smile in the 11-minute sequence. I'm not kidding. They didn't CGI faces to look this way, that's how they performed it. But that decision and the edit did no favors
