Fun fact the UK Supreme Court thinks that your immigration status is "precarious" even if you have a visa that you can really, really reasonably expect to renew. Here's the judgement:
bailii.org/uk/cases/UKSC/2018/

This matters because parliament passed a law that says if you start a private life (ie friendship, romantic relationship, caring relationship, community group, business, anything that connects you to the UK) when you're immigration status is "precarious", when deciding if you can stay in the UK that connection barely counts. In other words, your right to a private life doesn't amount to jack shit compared with the public interest in your removal. In the case in question, nothing that connected Ms Rhuppiah to the UK over basically a 20 year period protected from being kicked out even though she had basically always had a visa.

(It is also a fun fact that the UK reckons that you can pass a law which defines the public interest and defines it as being getting rid of anyone they don't want in the country.)

What is so odd about this are that there is a very obvious but much smaller class of people that the rule could apply to. Namely, people who have applied for a visa but haven't yet got a decision or people who have a visa that can't easily be renewed, eg tourists and students.

It was just a bloody horrific decision and shows, I think, that 'relative rights' are a joke. If we have to have states (we don't), the citizenry need the protection of inalienable rights however messy that is in practice (hello US folk).

It seems simple minded, but the solution is to do away with border controls.
