Apparently, there is a new wave.

In case you see this, new friend:

1. YOU are the algorithm. Follow, like, boost, and participate.
2. When uploading a picture, please add descriptive
3. Write hashtags with a capital letter for each word
4. Consider using the content warning feature more often than you would on other sites.
5. Don't be a dick.

Hi everyone! :ablobcatrainbow:

@krishnadraws hi Krishna, welcome! Searches only work on hashtags here and there’s no algorithm to “suggest” people to you, so it would be a good idea to write an post containing hashtags of your interests and pin it to your profile. People with similar interests will be able to find you that way! For , we use “camel case” here, which means to capitalize each word in a multi-word hashtag, ☺️🌻

Follow LOTS of people, then prune your list later. ☺️

Capitalise the first letter of each word in hashtags

This makes hashtags able to be picked up by screen readers

@p_im_b Yes, captioning images is so helpful! I still forget sometimes. I have only been here a month, so I'm still learning too.

My other suggestion is to use camel case/initial caps in your hashtags. not . Again, it's easier on screenreaders. Also, be careful: there are very popular misspelled hashtags. For photography I've seen "photogaphy" and "photorgaphy" for instance.

@matthewbogart I have also heard that multiple words should be done because then screen readers know they're two words and to read them as such.

@ammunist Follow many! You can also follow hashtags. Look for a little "+" in the top right of a hashtag search results screen. Also write an introduction with lots of hastags (this one is fine!) but tag it with (you can edit).

"Like" sends a thank you to the poster (that's all!) boost (retweet) shares it - Use that lots!

When you use capitalise each word so that people who use screen readers can work out what they mean.

Good luck! to

@craftylibrarian Welcome! Yup, echoing what others have said.

- Hashtags are super helpful.
- Descriptions are really important for screenreaders.
- Capitalizing hashtags also makes screenreaders very happy.
- Boosting helps folks see great toots.
- We're really quite lovely.
- If you come across someone you don't want to hear from muting and blocking is the way to go, and report accounts that need it.
- Everything's run by volunteers and they can use some love every now and then.

A relatively minor, but occasionally frustrating thing I've found with mastodon is that you don't seem to be able to search/filter by multiple hashtags. You put in your word(s), it spits out related hashtags, and you can search by one of those, but you can't add anything more. And putting two in just turns into

Both the web UI and tusky seem to have this issue.

*** Friendly reminder that for accessibility (screen readers), it’s is a kindness to capitalize your hashtags . It’s also very cool to use alt text for images. Thanks!

@Mrfunkedude @w8in @SuitedUpDev Camel Case is also recommended, so that they indicate words.

I love that people care enough to share these things, and that people do them!

@ChanSterling Fantastic colours. 👍

Over here you can only search usernames and hashtags, so use them as much as possible! Try to capitalise each word so screenreaders have an easier time with them.

Also, because there is no algorithm, boosts (retweets) are very important to circulate content.

@carolinegillpoetry It's okay to use either. But in the case of multi-word hashtags it helps folk using screen-readers if you capitalise the first letter of each word . Including any joining words like "Of" or "And."

The ones I can think of are liberally use hashtags and capitalize them . It’s more important to boost good posts than it was on the bird site with a feed algorithm. Please add alt text to photos if you can. Follow the main hashtags to find people outside our local server. And just generally that this isn’t twitter and we use the site differently.

Please capitalize the first letter of every word in a hashtag (terms like "camel case" and "Pascal case" are not helpful because almost everybody who knows what they mean already know to use them).
