Been thinking about this since I posted in Mandarin looking for other Mandarin speakers today. I used a construction that is very centered toward Northeastern China, which is where my family members are from. They are also all Han people. I am a white American lady who married into the family. Our kids speak mostly Mandarin at home, but when we use English I am trying to be a bit more intentional about some things. First, I try to refer to actors with Cantonese names by those names, not their Mandarin names. Leung Chiu-wai rather than Liang Chaowei. I’m trying to do this in general, not just with my kids. Second, though we rarely discuss it in English only, I am trying to refer to 春节as lunar new year rather than Chinese new year. I do this to reflect that so many folks in so many places celebrate this holiday.

@digigeolab I know it ain't much to look at, but I actually am rather proud of this one. I've been writing how the focal point of #LinguisticDiversity has been gradually moving to the northeast and this map confirms it. Much more will be forthcoming in an upcoming manuscript, y'all just have to wait for me to actually finish it.

I suspect the centroid movement would be more radical if I had used population weighted diversity as the centroid weighting scheme instead.
