Just successfully moved my #Unifi controller running two sites (home and church) from a #Linode to a #Docker #container on my #Synology #NAS. Pleasingly uneventful — was expecting too be dealing with the aftermath for most of the evening.

Pissed off that the only change #akamai brings to my use case with #linode is a price increase, and a hefty one. That’s it.

I have a lot of other business with #linode , but my mastodon instance is one of them.

The right-size appeal of #linode is probably going to disappear, just as I feared 😢 I guess I’ll look at #digitalocean , unless they announce the same increase next week (they certainly might)

Why the f can’t we just have nice things??

@swatantra but this can all be done in cloud as well, with nothing more than a $5 shared #linode instance. It will get you comfy with not being able to get your hands directly on the system, and it’s very easy to image/backup the whole system to blow it away and start over.

My recovery plan is just a full #linode backup of the node before and after. Luxuries of a lil instance (for now!)

Switching servers can be done right in your Settings->Account->Account Options->Move to/from. It’s a great feature to let your follows/followers stay with you if you jump around between instances.

Honestly - I have no idea what max user load looks like. I'm starting with a blank site (besides a few close friends), so I'll cross that bridge when I get there if people start joining.

Most services I run out of my house but I did this one on a Linode just to properly sequester it. Very happy so far!

The Canadian government is now requiring that Linode collects taxes for servers owned by Canadian residents. In order to do so you must have Tax ID, to give Linode, which is either a Business Number or the Social Insurance Number.
Anyone else heard of news of new requirement?
