I'm meeting a friend for coffee this week, and a quick online search shows that the bookstore next door to the cafe has the Roland Barthes book I need for a paper. It's a big win all around.

A quotation from Martial:

«««««
Some thirty poems in the book
Are poor, you say. Egad!
If you’ve found thirty good ones, too,
The book is great, not bad.
[‘Triginta toto mala sunt epigrammata libro.’
Si totidem bona sunt, Lause, bonus liber est.]

An old list of my favorite novels. Would change all but the top two now.

Though am sharing because I think it works as fairly well.

My only complaint with my is that book three the is snarky even though I put so high as a favorite.

The books are: 1 Stone Junction 2 Gravity's Rainbow 3 Blood Meridian 4 little, big 5 the ocean at the end of the lane.

It is the primitive fear of the reactions of ones tribe that hinders liberated action. It is the possibility to affect effective change that can overcome the hurdle. This hope for effective change versus the fear of ostracization is balanced differently in every creature. Anyone familiar with Zizek knows for him, the Act capitalized, is a personally momentous act and only after can one justify it’s profundity.

Hello, everyone! I've been on a massive Mastodon instance for years, but I finally decided to join my people over here. So it's time for a new introduction.

I'm in the middle of my master's in English Language and Literature program. My literary tastes are truly wide, which is making it a challenge to narrow my scope for a thesis project next year.

In the meantime, I'm studying , , , , and anything that strikes my fancy.

Perplexed (as I am) by the "grossly exaggerated justifications ...offered for academic literary studies"? Read Stefan Collini's great review of a good book about that. lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v44/n23/st

A fresh introduction for the latest comers to this instance:

I am a literary critic who reviews current fiction, but especially danielgreen.substack.com/?show

I have maintained the literary weblog, The Reading Experience

I’ve been asked who my favourite literary critics are, and why, for a magazine interview, and it struck me … I don’t really know. I like critics who are insightful, precise and humble, and whose criticism reads like literature in its own right. Who are your favourites and why?

& : the effect

“By continuously pressing the psychological complexity of her characters and narrator, Woolf establishes a kind of ontological indeterminacy where the reader is left with the disorientating impression that the self for Woolf is merely a conglomerate of chance perceptions and sensations.”

I know no one has read them. That’s probably my fault. So please pick up your copies and get back to me
