"For the City to fully thrive, it needs the social, economic and cultural assets that are essential to support growing communities in their day-to-day lives. This includes high-quality well-designed amenities such as libraries, schools and community centres, playgrounds and parks – places that support communities"

A reminder that #Galway *can* do well-proportioned, car-free, public spaces that integrate residential and commercial uses and respect the historic urban fabric.
While I wouldn't normally mourn the loss of a McD's fast food restaurant, this is symptomatic of a hollowing out of #Limerick city centre due to decades of poor planning which has shifted retail and housing to the periphery of the city.
It's an unsustainable pattern of development which is repeated around our other cities and is destroying our urban centres.

"San Francisco has become the prime example of what downtowns shouldn't look like: vacant, crime-ridden and in various stages of decay. But in truth, it's just one of many cities across the U.S. whose downtowns are reckoning with a post-pandemic wake-up call: diversify or die."

Imagine a transformation of the Walkinstown Roundabout that turned it into a place people might actually like to visit.
"Fewer admissions to hospital, fewer deaths from heart attacks and strokes, and fewer people with blood pressure problems" and billions saved in healthcare costs.
The benefits of Low Emission Zones in cities are indisputable so why are we so slow to introduce them in Ireland?

Great buzz on Parliament Street today. It's amazing how taking the cars out can be so transformative for a street!
Something to enjoy this weekend - slow progress but it's only a matter of time before Parliament Street is permanently car free.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) 2023 tenth-equal most liveable city is Auckland. For all that we complain about Auckland's problems, there are lots of worse places to live.

Traffic evaporation in action in Dublin!
The concern always with pedestrianisation is that vehicular traffic will be displaced to adjacent streets creating more congestion. What we are seeing here is the opposite - traffic on adjacent streets has also reduced as people switch to other transport modes or just no longer use this area as a through route
Local access traffic remains and the wider area is now more attractive for walking & cycling

Bezuidenhout, a neighborhood in The Hague, has received the city's first bicycle/tree platform! With only five cars shared among 45 households, there's more room in the street for bikes and greenery. 🚲🌳 #LiveableCities #GreenCities #BikeFriendly #HealthyCities

This is the future the Green Party want to impose on us - a car free Stephen's Green in the sunshine today (courtesy of the mini-marathon). Town was absolutely buzzing!
I've taken to having my lunch on Francis Street in recent days - nice to have a street that prioritises people over motorised vehicles and where you can sit out and enjoy the sunshine without feeling obliged to spend money.
The newly refurbished Francis Street came into its own in yesterday's sun. There is less traffic and the traffic is moving more slowly due to the narrower width of the carriageway and the proximity of trees, benches, bike racks and planting to the road edge. It was a pleasant place to sit out and have my lunch.
There's still far too much on street car parking though and closing it to through traffic would still be my preferred solution.
