This is probably one of the smallest pieces of municipal treasure that I have picked up - a London Borough of Merton lapel badge…

Municipal guide cover of the day: this example from the London Borough of Camden looks to be from the late 1980s (it is undated).
The orange logo of four pairs of joined hands, designed by Main Wolff & Partners, is meant to suggest “voting, giving, receiving and unity”.

Municipal guide cover of the day: A mid-1980s effort from the London Borough of Bexley.
The London Borough of Bexley was created in 1965, replacing the former Kent authorities of the Municipal Borough of Bexley, the Crayford Urban District Council, the Municipal Borough of Erith and part of the Chislehurst and Sidcup Urban District Council (the other part ended up in the London Borough of Bromley).

The ceremonial mace of the London Borough of Sutton and - in the second picture - the Mayor of Sutton.
But what does the Mace represent? This is from the Royal Borough of Greenwich website:
The mace is a symbol of authority and order. It is carried by a mace bearer in front of the Mayor into the council chamber and at major events. The chain of office represents the responsibility, authority and dignity which are attached to the office of the Mayor.

Municipal guide cover of the day: a late 1950s version from the Metropolitan Borough (MB) of Bethnal Green.
From 1900 to 1965, there were 28 MBs within the County of London. They were abolished in 1965 when the larger Greater London administrative area was formed along with 32 larger London Boroughs.
The MBs of Bethnal Green, Poplar and Stepney were replaced by the new London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
Long exposition for the benefit of new followers - apologies!
Just so that I am not accused of rehashing stuff from the bird site, here is something new…
From around 1992, some extracts from an official guide to the London Borough of Croydon. With planned new office and retail developments and imminent tramway, some of that 1960s optimism briefly returned to the town in the 1990s.
The guide was published by the British Publishing Company Limited on behalf of the London Borough of Croydon.

Finally for this evening and to continue the #introduction theme, some of my favourite covers to official guides to the post-1965 London Boroughs. Such guides, which really gained traction from the 1920s onwards, served various purposes depending on the precise location and point in time: tourism in central London; residential marketing for the outer suburbs in the 1930s; advising citizens of municipal services in all cases. The internet has now largely replaced them. #Municipal #Londonboroughs
