The meanings of words often changes in unpredictable ways. One of my favourite examples is:

idle
eidel

The Dutch and German words translate to English as ‘vain’. The English word typically refers to a person or system that is inactive, not occupied. The Luxembourgish word, by contrast, means ‘(physically) empty’: D’Fläsch ass eidel (The bottle is empty).
